Oh! What a wonderful book! I could not put it down. The Second Mrs. Hockaday was about a seventeen year old girl who marries an older man and has two days with him before he is called back to fight for the South in the Civil War. His young wife, Placidia, is left alone with a few slaves to care for her infant stepson and manage Major Hockaday's 300 acre farm. The story is told primarily through diary entries and correspondances between Placidia and her cousin.Near the beginning, we learn that Placidia has been arrested for a crime. We don't know what has happened. Through the various letters, we learn what she has been through in trying to maintain her home, and the terrible trials she has suffered. The book is mezmerizing. The language of the era and of the time rings completely true, and is both entertaining and enlightening. This is a book which will stay with me for a long time. I highly recommend it.
The Second Mrs. Hockaday by Susan Rivers254 pagesWhat’s it about? Major Gryffth Hockaday is on a short leave from the Civil War when he meets 17-year-old Placidia. In a whirlwind romance they are quickly married and immediately return to his farm. 48 hours after returning home he is called back to duty. Placidia is left to care for his young son, a few slaves, and the farm while the war rages on. Two years later, when the war ends, Major Hockaday returns to find Placicia accused of not only having had a baby while he was gone, but also murdering the baby. What really happened? What did it make me think about? What a pleasant surprise this little book was! It is the best page-turner I have read in a while. I could not put it down. The book is written as a series of letters and you just want to know more. Based on a true story, this novel illuminates what many women may have faced in the South during the Civil War.Should I read it? This novel combines history, great characters, and a compelling mystery to make for one good story! Any fan of historical fiction should pick this book up.Quote- “In marveling at how transformed he is, I strive to keep in mind that I am changed quite as totally as the major. It is challenging to remember the child who stood up before Rev. Poteat two years ago with a handful of spring flowers and a joyous heart, who trusted her fate to the good luck she had been born with and to a man blown into her path by the prevailing winds.â€If you like this try-Days Without End by Sebastian BarryUnderground Railroad by Colson WhiteheadLincoln in the Bardo by George SaundersMarch by Geraldine Brooks
I was entranced from page one, and I found myself highlighting (and quoting to others), more passages than I can track or count! I found the story, the prose, the diction and the voices, more engaging than anything I have read in a very long time.
I could not put this book down after reading the first few pages. I felt an instant connection to Dia and wanted someone to help her out of her legal predicament. In my opinion the structure of the novel is as fascinating as the story it tells. I'm looking forward to Susan Rivers next well researched book.
As a Southerner I see the the effects of the country as portrayed in this novel still with us today. As a woman I feel so drawn to Placidia Hockaday as she struggles to hold on to a relationship that had not had time to develop. And wonder how she could have trusted her husband so completely. I admired her bravery (I doubt she would have tho't of herself as brave), her strength of character, and her passion. This was such a good book, and all the people in it were so real to me. One of the best books I've read this year. Thanks
This book was a surprise to me. It was a book club choice, so I didn’t pick it for myself. It is not written in the style of today, it felt like going back in time. It’s narrative is melancholy on the whole. It deals with the harsh realities of the post civil war south and the life that was lived mostly by people who were not on the battlefield, but who were severely affected by it nonetheless. It is a mesmerizing tale, but not a cheery one. It started out a little slow for me, but hang in there you will be rewarded. One of the most absorbing books I’ve read in years. If you are looking for light reading, pass this up. But you will possibly have missed one of the best written books of the decade.
I liked the format of the book -mostly written as letters. The mystery revolves around a baby being born, and that was the hook that held my attention. There were parts of the story that left question marks. This really is not a about slavery or even the Cival War. It is about a very young wife trying to survive on a farm in the South in 1864 and 1865. The book skips to later years when the main character's children have grown. The novel includes slaves, rape, hard work, children, cruelty, love, and more. Like I wrote - it is a quick read, and the story- in places -just did not ring true, but the mystery kept me involved. For that reason, the book deserves an A+
Although this book is extremely well written, I'm giving it four stars. I felt there was a lot left to be desired in the plot. There is an overall mystery in the book, that is given a one page explanation, and I gotta say, the way it was explained kinda made no sense. I guess if she would have just told her husband it would have made a very short story, but when he finds out the truth, it is so anticlimactic that I was frustrated. The author strings us along, only to finish the book by giving us a crime committed by a character that was mentioned in a few paragraphs earlier in the book that the audience forgot about, but perhaps that's what we were meant to do. Overall, I liked this book, and I would recommend. I just hope the author doesn't get into mysteries. They'll be a snore for sure.
