What a better round the world guided tour than reading Tim Marshall's "A Flag Worth Dying For". Colorful and rich in detail, Marshall gives us brief (and occasionally not so brief) histories of how flags came into being for many nations.Vexillology, or the study of flags, begins with our own Stars and Stripes. While, as an American, this chapter I know best, there were still facts presented that added to my knowledge. A particular treat in the first couple of chapters is the author's sense of humor in his narration. As he moves through Europe through the Middle East and to Asia, Marshall's humor lessens as the culture of war becomes more dramatic in assessing the development of flags in these areas. Geographically, we go south of the equator to visit Africa and South America. What strikes me most are the similarities of flags in certain regions...i.e. Scandanavia and Central America. Finally, Marshall ends up with a chapter called, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" which features the Jolly Roger, the Olympics and the Rainbow Flag.Nicely ordered in accompaniment to the story are all the flags that the author discusses. It's a nice reference point to an unusual but important book. I highly recommend it.

Shipped it back - we actually found inaccurate information.

A decent entry into a very sparse collection of books about flags. However, the effort seemed rushed and often times faulty or too little information was given. As an introduction to the study of flags it leaves too much unexplained or undefined for too long. As a serious book for those more 'in the know' about flags and vexillology (the study of flags) it doesn't have quite enough new to add. When you add to that the generally casual tone and voice of the author, its hard to know who this book is for.Overall, however, it is nice to have a new book to add to the library of any serious fan of flags, but if you are well versed in world flag lore and categorization, this may not have anything to say to you.

Simple but very clear explanations about the real symbolic meaning of the World's most famous flags. Would recommend this book for any IR or PolSci student.

Got this book for a gift. He loves it.

I enjoy Tim Marshall as an author and this book will really teach you some things.

best book I have read on flags, what they mean and the Geo-politics

Very interesting book for all to read

#3,114 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

My first grade son was reading competently but slowly and without enthusiasm. He viewed reading as a chore, not a pleasure, and he never chose to read on his own. I tried to find books to spark his interest. Nothing was working until I bought Book 1 of the Dragon Masters series. I can't explain why, but he was crazy about this book from the first moment I handed it to him. For the first time, he sat down with the book, perused it curiously, and then started reading on his own. He read the entire book in two days, and he was so proud of himself for finishing a chapter book! He loves the characters, the illustrations, and the stories. He has now read Books 1-4, and he likes to talk about the books and act out the stories. Now, he is reading anything and everything I give him. For my son, these were the books that broke down his reading barrier. If you have an early elementary reluctant reader, I highly recommend giving this book a try. It is hard to find well-written chapter books for emergent readers, especially for boys. This series is truly the jackpot!

I was looking for something to read to my 7 year old daughter and 3 year old son. I wanted something gender neutral (I wanted to avoid Princess books). This book was great. My kids asked to read more than 3 chapters a night. This is one of the Scholastic Branches series books. Branches series were written for early chapter book readers. There are two levels: first level is with color pictures and lower Lexile (According to Scholastic website, for ages 5-7, 80 page full color Branches series are: Boris by Andrew Joyner, Kung Pow Chicken by Cindi Marko, Missy's Super Duper Royal Deluxe by Susan Nees, Owl Diaries by Rebecca Elliott, Princess Pink and the Land of Fake-Believe by Noah Z Jones), second level is black and white with a bit higher Lexile (according to Scholastic Website, for ages 6-8, 96 page, black and white Branches series are: The amazing stardust friends by Heather Alexander Illustrated by Diane Le Feyer, Dragon Masters by Tracy West Illustrated by Graham Howells, Eerie Elementary by Jack Chabert Illustrated by Sam Ricks, Looniverse by David Lubar Illustrated by Matt Loveridge, Lotus Lane by Kyla May, Monkey Me by Timothy Roland, and the Notebook of Doom by Troy Cummings) . This Dragon Master series falls onto the second level. My daughter enjoyed Eerie Elementary series (took 45-60 min to read per book) and The Notebook of Doom (took 45-60 min to read per book). Branches series have easy to follow story lines and attractive illustrations (black and white for second level) and I highly recommend them..

I ordered this book along with 1&3 of Eerie Elementary for my 1st grader who is on the spectrum. He absolutely LOVES this story and has started begging me to order the rest. I can't wait to afford them for him. Although explaining the concept of preorder to him was a tad difficult, hah, I love spending money on books and having my kids beg for them.

Rise of the Earth Dragon is a delightful early chapter book for the dragon-loving young reader. Drakes makes an appealing main character, especially his appreciation for worms. It's a shock for him to discover that he's been chosen as a Dragon Master, especially since King Roland's intentions don't seem to be good ones. But he is thrilled to meet his dragon even if he is very unsure about how to communicate with the Earth Dragon he names Worm. The black and white illustrations break up the text nicely making the book more appealing for reluctant readers. Those same illustrations offer a fun take on the whole dragon thing. I especially appreciate the length, at barely 90 pages the book works well for kids who want to read fantasy but are not ready for the longer ones. Highly recommended for most libraries, class, or homes.

I just bought this series for my kids after reading them twice through from the library. They are well written, have an exciting storyline that is not too scary for my 5 & 7 year old, and are something we all enjoy reading together. The first time we read them my then 1st grader and I would alternate reading chapters to each other. They are great early chapter books for both boys and girls!! Before buying here you may want to check prices on the scholastic website though as I found a box set there.

I cant say enough about how much I love this series of books! Our reluctant reader has been loving these books. This book is a solid grade 2 level book with great illustrations on each page. The chapters are short so they really give emerging readers a sense of accomplishment. The story is engaging and kept our son entertained and interested. The main character is a boy who is taken to the castle to be the kings dragon trainer. At the castle he meets the Wizard(his teacher) and three other dragon trainers, a boy and two girls, and of course he meets the dragons! We got this book for my son to practice reading but his younger sisters are really enjoying listening to the books too. My sons reading confidence has really grown, I love hearing hearing my son ask "can we read another chapter..?"

This book has been a game changer for us! I have a 7 year old son who is an emergent and reluctant reader. We have tried so many book series, all of which have failed to keep his interest until this series! It’s engaging, has wonderful illustrations, the plot is simple yet complex enough to stir interest. An excellent chapter book series! He’s already read the first three in this series in less than two weeks...a miracle in and of itself!

My first graders absolutely love this sereis. They cannot get enough. The only problem: the author cannot write them fast enough for their liking:) Can't wait to continue reading this series when book 8 somes out in September.
