In the news we frequently hear that Washington just doesn't work or that gridlock has taken over the system. In Pivotal Politics: A Theory of U.S. Lawmaking, Krehbiel provides an explanation for why. Basically, certain government institutional features, such as the president's veto and the Senate's filibuster, make it very difficult to change policy. Thus, it is possible to have gridlock even when the same party controls both branches of government.My two criticisms of the book are as follows. First, the writing is a bit obtuse. I understand this is for an academic audience (I consider myself part of that crowd). However, there are times when Krehbiel uses terms like "changes in gridlock," when it really seems to mean either an increase or decrease. Some of the diagrams aren't well explained and it took me a while to fully understand what was going on. Second, I'm not quite sure how his theory differs from the broader institutional literature on Veto Players.I do wish this book were more accessible to a wider audience. I think it goes a long way toward moderating the public's expectations with regard to "change".

I have been a fan of Louis L'amour for many years now. When I came across this collection of short stories by him, I thought I would read them. Now one thing about Louis L'amour stories is that sometimes you will have read a book that was originally a short story not knowing it started life as a short story and then come across the short story in a collection of short stories and go what the heck. But that is what I like about them you get a chance to the original idea he had for the story. Like. I said I am a fan of Louis L'amour and I enjoyed reading some old stories by an old favorite. These are stories worth reading again and again.

I have read many, many of L'Amour's books but I think his short stories are the best. You can get in and out quickly and, sometime with his longer books, they tend to be formulaic. So, anytime I can get a book of his short stories, I grab them and read them over and over again. They're like old friends.

I love L'Amour stories and I think I like the short stories best. They are so crisp,sharp, right to the point but complete. These are all terrific short stories. I've read them often but still enjoy them. L'Amour is a treasure.

I have always been a fan of Louis L'Amour and enjoyed this book of short stories. I haven't read anything by him in decades and was a little surprised by how much the world has changed since then. When I was a kid, the 'wild west' didn't seen that long ago and now it feels very far away. This was a nice interlude into the past and a completely different world of the 'cowboy way' of life.

If you are a Louie L`Amour fan you have probably already read these short stories. They are all good ones and any one who likes western stories will enjoy these. I don't know if these six stories have been grouped together before. If you have never read anything by Louie before I am sure these stories will make you want more.

I haven't read Louis L'Amour in years other than to re-read some of his books. I hadn't read these shorts but recognised some of his later books that stretched these stories out. It was like old times when I could a read Louis L'Amour for the first time.

Back in the fifties, the formula was the good guy got the girl in the end (actually it's still the formula). Louis L'Amour book is faithful to that formula. While woman were not well developed, in the fifties that's the way stories read. Enjoyed it.

Iâ€™ve read a few of Michio Kakuâ€™s books and Iâ€™ve really enjoyed them, which is why I decided to read this somewhat â€œolderâ€ book. Dr. Kaku is an excellent popularizer with a lucid and down to earth writing style and he has a modest and open minded way of approaching a subject. As the book is a little bit outdated at this point and because I have a couple of objections I rated it four stars, but it is a very â€œmind openingâ€ book that I strongly recommend.The book takes us on a journey through the discovery-history of higher dimensions and the quest to unify the laws of physics. It introduces us to Riemannian geometry and explains how forces can be viewed as consequences of geometry in higher dimensions (Hyperspace) a concept that was later used in the General Theory of Relativity, Kaluza-Klein theory as well superstring theory. The laws of physics become more unified, simpler and more beautiful if you add a few dimensions. He convincingly makes the case that you can discover the secrets of the Universe by peering into Hyperspace. The book also discusses topics such as the history of modern physics, relativity, quantum physics, the standard model, GUTs, super gravity, black holes, the big bang, parallel universes, etc. Towards the end of the book he is discussing the fate of the Universe and the fate of human civilization, and the threats we face from the potential of nuclear war, global warming, and possible collisions with asteroids.The book does not go into depth on any of the multiple topics discussed. It is not that kind of a book. However, on some minor topics I found it to be misleading, particularly on the topics of parallel universes and â€œSchrödingerâ€™s catâ€. For example, he states on page 261 â€œTo Schrödinger, the idea of thinking about cats that are neither dead nor alive was the height of absurdity, yet nevertheless the experimental confirmation of quantum mechanics forces us to this conclusion.â€ The last part is simply incorrect. This is an interpretation issue, not an experimental issue, and it is sorted out in different ways by more modern interpretations of quantum physics such as the ensemble interpretation and the relational interpretation of quantum physics, or via "decoherence". As for me, when I as a young student taking classes in Quantum Physics at the end of the 1980â€™s I adopted what was essentially a pre-cursor to the relational interpretation because of what I noticed when I tried to perform Galileo transforms on quantum wave functions. Thereâ€™s no real contradiction and there are no multiple worlds (universes) needed to explain this. Iâ€™ve seen other popularizers confuse people the same way, and I think it just turns people off.Anyway, other than the above minor complaint, I think this was a very enjoyable and interesting book that I am very glad that Iâ€™ve read.

It is hard to criticize much of the work which is conversational and lucid.And yet, there are substantial problems here.The author, a respected major scientist, is far from neutral here and is rather dismissive of the fact that there is no available method by which to prove the String Theory which he devotes a good part of the book to defending. It is true that the presumed 10 dimension model supports many different areas within Physics. Yet, consistency in giving the correct answer is insufficient to prove a theory. Newton's Laws worked well until Maxwell and later Einstein questioned the Principia's absolute standing. The Universe of Ptolmey in most ways, or the Geometry of Euclid were absolutes of their time. With few easy contenders, String Theory is definitely worthwhile, but the author has not chosen to show any scruples about it.Whether from the standpoint of increasing the interst of a segment of readers or not, the author also choses to digress to references to Star Trek and other Science Fiction a bit more than this reviewer feels to have been relevant. Some of the references may be seen as useful and others verge on fantasy, if not crossing well beyond the boundary.Scenarios of differing types of cultures, from our present 0 to I, II or III seem generally a bit optimistic in speculative nature at the least. The Earth and Universe might be doomed. Perhaps this is even in the purview of Physics, but projected escape measures would seem to reflect poor editing on top of some manic flight of fancy. At one point a human culture is perhaps to move through a wormhole to a fresh Universe.[I am sure that we can mess up the Universe there much less than we have here!]What I cannot fathom is whether we can transfer enough animal and plant matter with us to make some feasible ecology. What is it that we are to eat? What is it that we are to do for fabrics, for pets, for handling wastes. Perhaps as a type II or Type III civilization we have passed the need for pets or clothing or provision of Oxygen. Perhaps we can use the energy of a local Black hole emissions or some other astral energy, but what of petrochemicals for clothing materials (synthetics) or plastics. Are we to assume that culture can survive on a few Billion 'ready to eat' meals that have been brought along, if we have no ability to grow sufficient crops or herds of animals? Are we to live long as cannibals instead? And are we as such an advanced culture to thrive as a single species? Transporting a Biome to a different planet or Universe would entail logistics that have not really been addressed with any thought here or elsewhere and discussion of such fancies is so far 'over the top' as to have produced a cackle or two from me in the reading of this book.

Iâ€™m a Mac but most curriculum is PC based so finding step by step instruction BOTH for Mac and PC in one highly organized, easy to follow guidebook was a huge score. This book is specific to Interior Design and would be great for either a beginner OR like me, someone coming back to CAD after taking several years off and looking for a no nonsense approach. I would give more stars if I could.

I have not used AutoCad in several years and this book is just right as a refresher. Very easy to read and it provides exercises to use the commands. Highly recommend if you need a refresher. I referenced the previous review when making my purchase and so far glad that i did.

Having now read three of James Frey's four published works (not counting that weird pseudonym-series about the X-Men kids or whatever they are), I have come to consider myself a solidified fan. I care not what he made up or exaggerated in the controversial best-seller A Million Little Pieces, because that's still a damn good book, and his talent for minimalist prose is hard to ignore. My Friend Leonard is a `kind-of' follow-up novel, picking up shortly after where A Million Little Pieces left off to find James Frey writing in the first person about a somewhat-fictionalized version of himself.It begins with Frey in jail for a brief period following his completion of drug and alcohol rehab, then getting out of jail and receiving some horrific news (this news is actually revealed in the epilogue of AMLP, but further detail is given in this narrative). In the aftermath of an event that severely rattles James's recently-free-from-jail existence, he comes dangerously close to undoing everything he accomplished in rehab by dealing with extreme temptation to drink again (which would inevitably lead to harder substances). This battle with the harsh echoes of Frey's past addiction are prominent in the first half of the story, and he even keeps a sealed bottle of cheap wine with him at all times as a reminder to not drink; a defiant expression of great willpower to refuse alcohol, even though it is available to him every moment.Before long, Leonard is introduced: a charming, handsome, mysteriously wealthy fifty-something whom James had met and befriended while they were in rehab together. Leonard seeks Frey out and expresses a desire to `adopt' him in a way; to look out for James and care for him in a father-like relationship. Mind you, Frey is jobless and completely broke upon leaving jail, meanwhile fighting grief and teetering on the edge of falling back into addiction. Leonard has a particular fondness for James, as well as the means to provide for him, so their relationship is taken to a new level which changes James's life in some big ways. Leonard even takes to calling James `My son' for the remainder of the book, and while Frey finds this somewhat silly and strange, he is thankful to have such a generous friend in a dark time.James makes his way through several ultra low-end jobs, including one as a bouncer at a dive bar. Eventually he is offered a position by Leonard, a position that is very loose and undefined, even a bit shady. James earns a great deal of money by running `errands' for Leonard, though he spends very little of it and does not count his wealth as much.This description so far probably sounds very simple and rather uninteresting. The narrative is simple, but not in a boring or pointless way. It is, at the heart, the story of a man unfolding and coming to a place where he is finally taking care of himself, growing up, and finding joy in places other than self-destruction. This comes through great pain and loss, but the redemptive quality is thus all the more sweet. This is also the story of a deep and sacred friendship, one that mirrors the best father/son scenario one could imagine.James Frey's writing is loose and minimalist in the sense that he intentionally excludes most punctuation, save periods and commas, and also utilizes multiple run-on sentences. While these two qualities may sound like simply the bad habits of a lazy writer, they are executed so well that it ends up giving the piece a very stark, human-thought-process sort of realism. When things get intense or very sad and the character smashes four or five sentences into one mad dash, the severity of the moment is felt because that's the way our minds tend to blur everything together under stress. At other points his dialogue is defined by beautiful, subtle honesty, and it is through the conversations in the book (including the ones going on in James's head) that really bring out the true attributes of each character.My Friend Leonard was an easy read and a poetic delight. The story is plain in subject, but rich in character, delicate observation, and authentic interactions. Like everything I've read from Frey, there is great humor in this story, as well as loss and sadness that are gripping around your heart to rip it violently out of your chest. Again, this is how life is, is it not?If you've not read A Million Little Pieces, I would recommend being introduced to Frey's work that way, though it is not necessary material to enjoy My Friend Leonard as a stand-alone. Either way, I would highly recommend any and all of his books to any reader with an appreciation for real people going through real circumstances interlaced with lovely prose and keen observation.

I absolutely LOVED this book! If you know anything about James Frey, as a writer, then you'll know he's a bit more controversial in his books (especially in his very first published book!). However, no matter what you feel about him personally, I highly recommend you read this!. Obviously, this book will certainly hit you harder if you've read his first book, 'A Million Little Pieces', beforehand but I wouldn't say it was a requirement to do so! It was far more emotional than I expected!! Truly a great read and writing style!!

****** SPOILER ALERT********Love this book even more than a million pieces! The reason for 4 /5 stas is because he married the neighbor girl! He didn't even explain or go into detail about how and when. Other then that it was perfect.I do feel bad for his wife though because if she reads this she will read some pretty awful stuff about past gfs

Page turner with a satisfying storyline, well-written (despite lacking ANY grammar/punctuation/normal dialogue!) I really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. Frey can depict a fictional human in an authentic light (except EVERYONE in the story smokes cigarettes, and it's the 90s...) I really felt what the protagonist felt--the highs and lows. Just ordered my second Frey book!

This is quite an amazing sequel to his first book. A great and quick read. Just be sure to read the first book "A Million Little Pieces" first so it all makes sense for you!

'My Good Friend Leonard' is sort of the "next chapter(s)" in the story of James Frey after his stint in rehab. The story starts off right after he gets out of rehab. The beginning is about Lilly. The rest of the book is about him just getting his life back together and finding mundane jobs, trying to stay sober and how his friend Leonard impacts his life and supports him just as a father should. Some of the story gets a tad slow in the middle, but toward the end it does move better. Personally I enjoy James Frey's style of writing although the editor in me kind of gets annoyed with the run on sentences and missing commas and periods, but he is utilizing the same style of storytelling as in 'A Million Little Pieces.' I think that his style had more impact in his first novel rather than in this one, but it's very "him" and I like it. I was very interested to read about James' life and how he did turn things around for himself and I found myself continuing to be interested throughout 'My Friend Leonard.' I felt all of the emotions he wanted me to feel in the end and I enjoy the fact that James knows how to tell his story in his own words. I like that he touched my heart in his portrayal of Leonard and it almost feels like I knew Leonard myself. I highly recommend reading this especially if you enjoyed 'A Million Little Pieces' because it just completes his first novel and gives us some closure.

This book is all kinds of beautiful. Terrific character development and excellently ended. Just made me cry at the end.

This book tells the tale of James, an addict, who meets Leonard in rehab. Leonard is a mobster who takes James under his wing and "adopts" him as his son. When they're back in the real world, you learn through James the trials and heartbreak of life after rehab. Leonard is always there for James and treats him just as if he were his real son. It's a wonderfully entertaining if not sometimes heartbreaking story. Two-thirds of the way through, I started to think about how the book could end in a way that wasn't trite or cheesy (Like most mobster-inspired stories). Mr. Frey threw me for a loop and the book ended in a very poignant and endearing way that I really didn't expect. The writing style is great too, with run-on sentences and super-long paragraphs - more of a stream of consciousness put down on paper than actual writing. I love that style and this did not disappoint.Read this book - you will NOT be disappointed.

I couldn't put the book down; had to finish it, wouldn't put it down until the last page. Miss Debrabandere can write some kick ass female leads. Commander Al'yseea Y Shar is a force to be reckoned with. How she moved through her memories as a human named Sky was well written. I enjoyed the opening of the book...3 years from the last installation. The battle scenes weren't overworked and the intensity of the political intrigue was tight.I enjoy this kind of story; women warriors, soldiers, hard on the outside but gentle and loving on the inside with a sense of duty, honor, and loyalty.If there's a third installment I'd like it to be with the Commander visiting her brother on Earth and meeting Kelsey again and falling in love. That would be a good read; surgeon & soldier & battle ship, oh my!

It was captivating and I enjoyed catching up, but I didnt like the ending. It wasn't satisfying at all when the whole reason Sky fought for Earth was for Kelsey.

I have to say I so enjoyed the continuing story of Sky, Jen ,Mitch and the rest of Sky,s crew and friends. This sequel is well written, exciting and also some surprising end results. I won't do a spoiler so all I can say I hope it doesn't end here but if it does so be it. I look forward to see what Natalie comes out with next , I highly recommend this series.

My daughterâ€™s favorite book (sheâ€™s 16 months), even now in June I have to read it to her several times a day. Very cute story resembling tortoise and the hare, with a twist.

This is probably one of my son's favorite books now. The illustrations are well done, I like the paper quality, and it's a cute story. My son loves saying all the characters names as he sees them on the pages.

I bought several copies for the grandkids, they love it. They run over to grab this book for me to read, smiling as they hurry back over with anticipation.

Beautiful book. Full of bright colors. My little girl has me read it over and over again.

This is a great little book of modern fantasy, it is written by a skilled Abenaki storyteller. The book is billed in the description as a juvenile horror story but it is really more of a juvenile adventure story coming of age hero tale with some supernatural, wilderness, and mystery elements worked in. The plot centers around a well paced and exciting treasure hunting adventure, a struggle with some criminals, and an encounter with a mysterious creature. However the heart of this book is a glimpse at the worldview of the the traditional Abenaki culture especially as it relates to traditional stories, myths, and legendary creatures. It's a gem, highly recommended.

The Native American Abenaki people have a legend about a huge flying creature called Pmola. It lives in the mountains, guards its treasure, and punishes trespassers harshly.To thirteen-year-old Paul, this legend has always been little more than a scary story, until the dreams start haunting him. Then, he and his Grandpa Peter run afoul of a ruthless treasure hunter who has heard the legend of Pmola.
