This book suggests that it is time for a different approach, one that is supported by social science and by new national standards for emergency management programs. This approach is based on the concept that emergency management is a distributed process, one that must be collectively performed by the community. Emergency management must be integrated with other community goals and as such, must be perceived as adding value to the community by helping the community manage overall risk. This community-wide approach also holds implications for the emergency manager. Instead of a technical expert on emergency operations, the emergency manager becomes a program coordinator whose job is to facilitate the development of a community emergency management strategy and oversee its implementation. â€œAs the British walked forward the classic drama of the Western Front was again enacted, in this instance even more graphicallyâ€¦for as they did so the rain perversely stopped and in perfect visibility German machine-gunners began to play upon the advancing waves of men, their bullets lashing and spurting from the pillboxes and from behind parapetsâ€¦As the British walked, some seemed to pause and bow their heads; they sank carefully to their knees; they rolled over without haste, and then lay quietly in the soft almost caressing mud. Others yelled when they were hit, and grabbed frantically at limbs or torso, and rolled and tumbled. In their fear of drowning beneath the slime they tried to grip the legs of their comrades, who struggled to break free.â€For about 99% of the participants, on the British side, in the third battle of Ypres (the very repetitiveness of that nomenclature for the battle was instructive of the folly involved, so why donâ€™t we call it something different, and name it after a now obliterated small crossroads village a couple of hours walk awayâ€¦ that is, in peace time, on a sunny day: Passchendaele). The author, Leon Wolff, does a brilliant job of explaining the unexplainable: How was it possible to do this AGAIN, only one year after the slaughter of the Somme, in which 20,000 British soldiers were killed on the first day of that battle, on July 01, 1916.He commences his account on New Yearâ€™s Day, 1917. The thrown hats in the air, and the wonderful joy of taking your thoughts off your domestic problems with a quick and manly foreign adventure were long gone, as occurred in August, 1914. Yet, STILL, those who sought peace were cowardly. Virtually everyone, the politicians AND the generals strongly opposed another â€œbloodbath.â€ Assurance were given all around that it would not happen, AGAIN, yet it did. Wolff is in par excellence form in explaining the â€œlogic of war,â€ and the interlocking political and military relationships. Much of the folly was the result of the outlook of one man: Sir Douglas Haig, the Commander of the British troops. A telling insight is that he was the only man, up to that time, to be married in the chapel that had been exclusively reserved for royal weddings. And the pictures, ah, those pictures, of him standing in full uniform, rigid, stiff upper lip, and those boots, shined to a mirror finish (by his orderly, of course) while his men are in mud up to their hips.Time and time again, with wry insight, Wolff provides an incisive observation. He quotes the Prime Minister before Lloyd George, H.H. Asquith: (the War Office) â€œâ€¦kept three sets of figures: one to fool the public, one to fool the Cabinet, and one to fool itself.â€ Lloyd George himself opposed the offensive (most of the time) but felt he did not have the political strength to either fire Haig or tell him NO. And the press was such a handmaiden to the folly, reporting â€œvictoryâ€ after â€œvictoryâ€ with such uncritical acclaim, though with any look at the map, a six year old would go: at 100 yards a day, how long will it take to get to Berlin? But Haig KNEW the Germans were â€œon the ropes,â€ and with only a few hundred thousand more troopsâ€¦ Sorry, didnâ€™t Westmoreland also know that the enemy was â€œon the ropesâ€, and with only 206,000 more troops. Plus ca changeâ€¦Wolff provides brilliant book ends to his account. He commences with: â€œIn the beginning Neolithic intertribal rivalries had gradually blended into coherent European history. Thousands of years came and went. The people, the kingdoms, the quarrels, the modes of conflict changed; but the causes of the wars remained as irrational as ever.â€ And he ends with an incisive quote from Thomas Carlyleâ€™s Sartor Resartus concerning 30 British villagers and 30 French villagers, in the south of Spain, during the Napoleonic Wars, none of whom had a personal quarrel with the other, killing each other, all because their leaders (of the polished boots) had had a quarrel.Does Passchendaele â€œhauntâ€ Western Civilization? â€œSorta,â€ might be the most operative answer. First published in 1959, this book currently has only 20 reviews at Amazon in the USA, and only EIGHT in the UK. Best not let the obscenity of this battle interrupt your dinner party. On the other hand, fear of home front reaction to war casualties is the motive force behind drone warfare, and the 200,000 to 500,000 deaths occur in some other country, where the reporters are not. Wolff was brilliant, yet again, in his epilogue, noting that British society simply shunned Haig, without formally indicting him for "murder,â€ which is the Wolffâ€™s appropriate description for the loss of 13,000 New Zealanders in a few hours. Overall, Wolffâ€™s best estimate is that half a million were killed on the Allied side, with a kill ratio of 1.6 to one AGAINST the allies. In yet again, the â€œPlus ca changeâ€¦â€ category, immediately after the Second World War, the War Office attempted to reverse these numbers, claiming â€œonlyâ€ a quarter million were killed, with a 2 to 1 kill ratio in FAVOR of the Allies. Please note that the Pentagon is currently revising its official version of the Vietnam War. The â€œspin doctorsâ€ at work. 6-stars for Wolffâ€™s excellent account, with the centennial of the battle less than a year away.

Not only this is an excellent book, but the whole Time Reading program is excellent.It is a very sad book, but human life is not all roses and sunshine either. When we get into wars, this is the result (and I am not a pacifist, sometimes it is the only way to stop bullies is to punch them in the nose.

For those who accept the premise that conscription is slavery, the murder of millions of young British men by Sir Douglas Haig and other detached, deluded, or debauched souls in England's high command will always occupy a special place in the Museum of Mass Murderers, and Leon Wolff's account of the Flander's conflict, aka the Third Battle of Ypres, aka Passchendaele will stand as a vivid account of the unrelenting creation of a Hell to rival the best that Dante had to offer.

Leon Wolff's book shows an erudite mind at work. His description of the hideous battles that made up the shapeless and shambolic mess that was 3rd Ypres are searingly good, but for me it is his excellent portrayal of Haig vs Lloyd George that makes the book outstanding. Reading it and realizing that Haig had to show the politician who was really in charge, by persisting with a meaningless slog through bottomless mud, at the cost of heartbreaking casualties, brought home more than anything else I have read, the crass stupidity of war. Wolff refers to Haig's chief confederate, Lt Gen Kiggell, breaking down into sobs at being shown a part of the battlefield. "Did we really send men out to fight in that?" This much used quotation has been debunked by many people as untrue, and yet this vignette continues to fascinate me. I suspect that it is true, but because it didn't appear in an official memoir, it has been attacked as untrue. I wonder. It all reminds one of the attempt made by the Victorians to rewrite history and have Admiral Nelson's last words as "Kismet, Hardy..." Enough. For anybody who knows nothing about World War 1, read this book.

"Courting the Vicar's Daughter" is the latest (and final, I assume) installment in the wonderful series by Sally Britton entitled "Branches of Love". The vicar's daughter Daisy is empathetic and selflessly helps others. However, the Bible quote "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall" certainly applies to her and her reaction to something near the end of the book. Harry is wonderful and works hard to prove he's nothing like his father."The Social Tutor" and "Courting the Vicar's Daughter" are my favorites in this series, although all the novels are great. Christine plays a part in this book, and I just love her.Regency Romance is a favorite of mine, and save one story, I've read everything Ms. Britton has written. I own the Timeless Regency Romance Anthology "Evening at Almack's", to which Britton has contributed, but I have yet to read it. Importantly, her novels are clean and historical details are accurate. There are just a few grammatical errors but they don't retract from my enjoying her books.

Miss Augusta Ames (nicknamed Daisy) is a dutiful country vicar's daughter who tries to find ways to help her community as her father taught her too. She is not looking to marry but care for those around her.Mr. Harry Devon has inherited his father's estate and the shadow of the man's reputation. He would rather spend time with his sisters who are all happily married than sit in an empty house. He has no purpose until one day he meets Miss Ames who tells him all that he could do to change the reputation of the Devon name.I loved Harry in the last book about his sister, Rebecca and now to read about him grown up looking for his own path in life was a joy to read. Harry and Daisy's romance story is sweet. I loved how we got to see the sisters be protective of Harry. I have read all the books in this series and would recommend them. This was a sweet ending to this series.

Loved this book! While I was very happy for the last of the Devon family to find love and also a true purpose for his life, I am sad to see this excellent series end. All five books were so enjoyable it would be hard to pick a favorite. But Harry Devon was indeed at a serious turning point in his life. With the able help of Daisy, he found his true path and the joy of really pursuing a noble yet sometimes difficult path. While we say goodbye to the Devonâ€™s, we know they all have found their happily ever after!

I hate to see this series end, but it certainly ends well. Harry and Daisyâ€™s story was beautiful and well written. I truly enjoy Ms. Brittonâ€™s work and how she develops her characters.

Ow absolutely wonderful this whole series is. As the sixth book in the series, we got a glimpse of the lives of the previous characters, and it just made me want to go back and reread their stories. There is such great depth to the way this author portrays the various ways people can fall in love - and the hard choices everyone faces in life. Choices to forgive, choices to love, choices to LIVE. The character development, and the humor, make these books a wonderful escape. Harryâ€™s story is a perfect partner to the beautiful ones told before. All fresh and new, no repeated tropes, no obvious copies of other stories. Harry made me laugh, too.Though part of a series, it isnâ€™t essential to read the books in perfect order because it should not really be a spoiler that the characters end up happily together in the end. The joy isnâ€™t so much in learning that outcome, but in enjoying the journey. And this whole series is a journey I will take again and again.Clean, with just a few kisses to keep it interesting.

This was a great book to end the series on. I could always go for more though if the author ever decided to continue on. I really liked the H. I thought he was a great charachter. The author did a good job on telling his story and journey finding who he was. The whole book held my interest and it was a sweet story like a good Sarah Eden. (Though they are different writers of course and so have their own style.) The h I sometimes had mixed feelings about. She sometimes had a holier than thou attitude. I think the way the author handled that character flaw in the end was good. My only caveat was I thought "I think Harry was too easy on her" but hey, I can be petty so what do I know. lol! I think all the characters were well written and beyond 1-demensional.

If you've read the rest of Sally's Branches of Love series, you're probably wondering how Harry Devon turned out and are eager to read his story. You won't be disappointed. Harry Devon inherited his father's estate several years ago. He had school to finish, and then he went traveling. But, now he's back and not quite sure what to do with himself. Thanks to his father's unending quest for wealth, he has more than enough money; he hardly needs a job. And, estates run themselves, right? I mean, that's other's jobs; Harry's not really needed there, right? Besides, he's not even entirely sure he wants to keep the estate. The only good memories there are of his sisters, who are all now married with families of their own, and he's only one man. He even goes so far as to stay with his sister rather than in his own home. But then he meets Daisy Ames, the vicar's daughter. And, suddenly, Harry's looking at things in a whole new way. But, battling his late father's reputation turns out to be no easy thing. This is a clean read and the editing is decent. The story is a lot of fun. And, while Harry is a little lost to start with, he's still a good person and easy to root for; and at least he knows good advice when he hears it. I did think things between Harry and Daisy were resolved a bit too easily; forgiveness is one thing, a trust issue is something else and takes longer to work on. I received an ARC from the author. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so and the opinions stated are my own.

So... DevOps.DevOps is this mythical assembly line of progress that gets code from point A to point B in record time, and by record time, I mean no time. Coded, auto-tested, out the door, bing, bang, boom. The book was an entertaining read (and/or listen) and the authors cleverly couch the concepts of DevOps into a story about a failed delivery system (The Phoenix Project) built ala WaterFall, versus a new system hastily assembled (heh, see what I did there?) on an impromptu assembly line and delivered in record time, performing brilliantly - when compared to the failed behemoth Phoenix Project.So... here's the problem with DevOps, and the problem with this book.Companies with a nightmarish legacy code base (delivered or not as-of-yet out the door) that are attempting to build DevOps are using the same people that created their behemoth nightmare in the first place. As does the company in the hypothetical story in the book. Worse. The CEO in the book is a horribly bad boss, making wrong decision after wrong decision (I am sure to ramp up the tension to illustrate the saving graces of DevOps). So, I can tell you definitively that ANY company with leadership like that would lose their brilliant techs almost immediately. The market is in desperate need of brilliant techs so there is zero possibility that they are going to stick around a cess pool of politics when they can get a signing bonus and a raise from a company already doing it better and faster, and all without the drama. I'm just saying. And in order to pull off a DevOps operation, you absolutely need brilliant techs. You need tight, well executed product code with sufficient testing hooks so you can automate as you go. So you need brilliant QA that can understand and/or code the hooks right along-side the devs.In short, you need a whole lot more than a single Brent. You just do. And to imagine that there are a room full of brilliant techs writing broken down shoddy bloated code for Phoenix, but then can turn around and write the brilliantly architected code you need for the DevOps project... well... I am able to suspend belief when called upon, but this was more like taking it out back, shooting it, and burying it six feet under. I'm just sayin'.And with that being said, I am a huge, ginormous fan of DevOps (and the book was a FUN read / listen, thus the 4 stars instead of 3). It just takes an incredible talent pool to pull DevOps off and books like this makes companies think they just have to implement this process with the talent they have and poof! instant quality software that can be delivered instantaneously! Woohoo! They would be better served facing the reality of the mess they have, caused by (possibly) a lack of reasonable process, yah, but almost certainly by lack of talent as well. That's basically how they got where they got.Off soap box now. Doing the tango. Eating Oreos. Feel free to join!

The Phoenix Project is a business book masquerading as a work of fiction. As soon as I started evaluating The Phoenix Project in the context of a business book, rather than fiction, I started enjoying it a lot more, gaining much more insight into the concepts presented, rather than focusing on the unsophisticated prose and highly contrived scenarios. The "plot" serves as a vehicle for the authors to explore and pontificate on the business ideologies presented throughout. The main character, Bill, is mentored through each of these concepts, implementing them for the benefit of the reader to see the dramatic impact each can have on a business. For the most part, this is well executed, but it can become tedious when the characters "furiously take notes, so that they can google the terms later." Yes, the authors really write this, banging the reader of the head with, "Hey Dummy, are you paying attention? This is important."One of the best parts of the book was actually after the fictional plot ended, and the authors took the extra time to collect the concepts presented and revist them in a brief summary at the end. I hoped for this, as going back through The Phoenix Project to find each in turn, and learn more would have been difficult. If I could suggest to the authors an improvement, it would be to break the 4th wall during the fictional telling of the plot, and provide footnotes or references to the reader referencing where in the summary section they can read a bit more about a given concept. Nothing would be lost by this approach, as the reader quicky realizes the point and purpose of the plot anyways.Overall, The Phoenix Project provides an easy way for non-business people to get their feet wet with process improvements, without making the explanations and concepts too burdensome. I find myself quoting passages with co-workers who've also read the book, realizing that all too many of the scenarios presented are real life problems we face everyday (though perhaps less severely than in the Phoenix Project.) As such, I know I've already taken something away from the book, even if I won't have a chance to master every improvement, or even experiment with them all. It provides a new way of thinking about software development, and all the organizations it impacts. Four stars.

I'm writing this as Dennis, spouse of Mary, who has the actual Amazon account.I purchased this book as I had bought Cook's original book "How to repair and restore furniture", published several years ago. This"New" book is identical in content to the first book. The only changes are in the jacket cover pictures and the jacket itself. I had wrongly assumed that this would be a new edition of his original book with much more information than he presented originally. I was WRONG! The book is excellent in content and the Reprint has larger pictures and larger type. I suppose if you're visually impaired the reprint may be of more interest to you than the original. So to any of you who may be interested in purchasing either book you now know the differences between the two.However if you do any repair or restoration or creation of furniture, you will find this book to be a very, very valuable resource.

I bought this as a gift for my wife who is getting started in refinishing furniture and she really likes it as does my daughter both have said they are learning a lot and has made jobs easier

Like new, information I needed for a restoration project. Very pleased

This book has a lot of useful information and definitions that will help someone interested in meditation, spirit guides and more. Tianna Galgano breaks it down into useable and easily understood "chunks" that can be considered and implemented into your everyday life. She is respectful of different belief systems and does not insist on slavish adherence to one or another. This resonates well with me - it's part of my own personal philosophy. I have meditated before, but not for a very long time. I am looking forward to using the meditations in this book to renew my practice. This is a great grounding text - and the links within the book for audio recordings of the meditations are very valuable.

Packed full of useful information with practical exercises that are easy to follow. Full of fun short meditations that are effective.

I am sorry to say that I did not learn much from this book. I was hoping to find an exercise in that book that would blow me away. I did not.

I love the practical, hands on approach the author uses to present the meditations. Themeditations are concise and to the point. I have enjoyed using them. I know that I willbe able to apply them in my healing arts practices for myself and for others.

Intuitive sensing that seemed very esoteric are explained clearly. Clear instructions on reading your own responses during a meditation or when attempting to communicate with a spirit guide.

Female academics are few when it comes to writing and teaching about adult film. Linda Williams and Constance Penley come immediately to mind and now the name of Dr. Chauntelle Tibbals can be added to the list. In Exposure: A Sociologistâ€™s Explores Sex, Society, and Adult Entertainment, Dr. Tibbals delves into the adult industry with a critical question: how should pornography be interpreted as part of our society and does its reality challenge our beliefs and expectations?To put it another way, Tibbals points out that porn fights an unending battle against preconceived notions. Arenâ€™t all porn girls and the business they represent just an extension of â€œwhat may stir fear or revulsion in one person may be the hottest thing ever to the next?â€ The author weaves a story of the all too often simplistic answer to that question. Using a personal example, she recounts dealing with her grad school adviser who swore to revulsion and discounted everything else, sidetracking Tibballs' research.Dr. Tibbals presents her argument in an easy-to-read format with personal accounts that will seduce the most casual reader. Whatâ€™s more, there is something in the pages of Exposure for everybody be it on the business side of the industry (product piracy is huge . . . and where does the film music come from?) to the feminist interpretation of adult content. Traditional anti-porn feminism is referenced specifically looking at the governmentâ€™s war on porn in the 1980s. Not to be missed is Tibbals discussion of Linda Lovelace and Traci Lords who became emblematic of porn as evil, though the stories (read: honesty) of both are suspect. Having said that, what enlivens Tibballs is her ability to look at both side of an issue. In this case, she supports Lovelace and Lords as self-assertive.Best of all, Exposure is a personal Odyssey beginning with the author's graduate school through her current position as a writer, online host, and overall industry maven. That alone is worth the purchase price of Exposure.

I am so mad!!!I'm mad at this book and I'm mad at Dr. Chauntelle for writing it. Sure it's a fascinatingly interesting, well written book by an expert on the topic, more than qualified to write on it but damn...if ever there is an example of not wanting to know "how the sausage is made" (so to speak) it's the porn industry. I have survived a significant number of years on this planet with the clear understanding that life on the set of a porno movie must be an absolute, non-stop f**k-fest. The cameraman, production assistants, craft services, etc. When the cameras stop rolling, that's when the REAL action starts in a twisted, beautiful yet sticky ballet of unscripted sexy time.Turns out, that's not what happens at ALL. Turns out, it's so business like there, a person could even fall asleep while on set just to observe(!!)Initially, I'd been so mad at my guidance counselor for not telling me this was an area of study I could pursue. By the end, I knew more about the inner workings than I'd ever expected to. I want to go back to my misguided belief of what I'd described above.Jokes aside, all in all, this book is a full-fledged success. I only hope there is a follow up that can delve further into the topic. I will read that in a heartbeat.

This is a much smarter book than I was anticipating. It doesn't just take you on set with beautiful naked people, it actually puts you inside the head of the actors, directors, producers running the adult business, and their relationship with society. Along the way, the author "exposes" her struggles to reveal the intricacies of a very small niche community and not just how it is perceived but also WHY it is perceived that way. During her journey you catch her falling in love with what she uncovers, and that was completely unexpected. This is a thoughtful book which sheds a new light on the power of sex, the role of sex in society and ultimately how our sexuality has to be explored in order to evolve.

Before reading this book I had multiple prejudices against people working in the adult entertainment industry. The crazy part is, I work in that industry! If you think you know the pornography industry, think again!The book begins by showing how even associating yourself with the porn industry could be met with prejudice. The first of many struggles Dr Tibbals would have to face was choosing the direction of porn for her dissertation. People she truly respected would lose all sense of logic when the subject of adult entertainment was brought up. This intrigued Dr. Tibbals because, as she put it, "I could scramble the smartest, most educated of brains. And that was it for me. I was hooked---porn for life."Throughout the book Dr Tibbals takes us through her porn journey. From her first time seeing pornography, to her first time in a sex store, this book gives you a hilarious, and educated, view of a world most people are too scared to look into. This book helped me realize there is no shame in being a part of this industry and if I want to see the world change, I have to do something about it. However, if you want to go up against people who think differently than you, education on your subject is important. I really had no information on pornography apart from what society had given me before reading this book. "Exposure" makes you comtemplate on the preconceived ideas you have about the sex work industry.

I love gardening books, though often I find that like this one they're long on "inspiration" (2/3 of the book) but short on help for planning. While the book does advocate for planning based on your region, site, etc., it's less helpful than a beginner needs and more basic than an old hand needs. The author discusses some how-to's and gives some plant recommendations for specific purposes within the no-mow yard, there's little to help one design by region, by type of site (northern vs southern vs. midwest vs southwest vs northwest, etc. Dry high mountains in west vs wetter, lower mountains in AR/OK and east, vs all kinds of flat lands, etc. Large vs. small city vs town, etc.). Over all a nice book to read, but probably minimal help other than to look up plants and since only about a quarter of ones recommended are native, it won't take long to go through those.

I really love this book and I am truly enjoying it and I have bought many books in the past but their ideas werenâ€™t reasonable or they were too expensive. This book has a lot of common sense practical examples and some beautiful pictures and it gives you a lot of ideas to let your imagination do the rest of the work. I donâ€™t usually like to spend money on books but I highly recommend you keep spending money on this book as itâ€™s something nice to always refer to and you donâ€™t have to take it back if you borrow it from the library - itâ€™ll always be there for you to look at and to refer to. The author style of writing is very pleasant and pleasurable. This is really a great book and I recommend it for anyone that doesnâ€™t want to mow their darn yard anymore!

I hate my lawn. I hate mowing it, I hate feeding it, I hate watering it, and I've certainly never aerated it. But everyone has to have a lawn, right..? Not so! This eye opening tome reminds us that sprawling lawns were once the thing of kings and noblemen who wanted to display their wealth by means of cultivating huge expanses of unused land. What am I? A nobleman? No, I am a poor, first time homeowner on a postage stamp sized lot. Why wouldn't I want to make the most of my yard? This book demonstrates to the reader that there is more to gardening than tedious and unrewarding lawn care. I've wanted to incorporate flowering shrubs, vines and fruiting plants into my front yard for years, but I would be the first in my newly developed neighborhood to try something outside of the boring developer's landscaping plan. This book has given me the courage to go for it.

Not what I expected........I returned it and appreciated the easy return from Amazon.Not as many photos as I would have liked and most of the plants and ideas weren't suitable for my northern yard.

I found it did not help me at all going to give it away. I wanted a book that focused on lawn alternative. I had a small section of the subject and few names, no names which I had already considered. I was very disappointed. The yards seemed more for backyard certainly not full sun front yards. Just did not work for me. If I had a preview of this book I would have bought it. Got to remember that in the future. Preview is important to know what you are getting.

I'm a licensed irrigator. I make my living by repairing sprinkler systems for homes and businesses. I'm building a new home and it will have a lot of low-water plants and drip irrigation only--and no grass. Not of the carpet/mow/uniform type, anyway. This book does a great job of giving specific plant names and ideas on placements and combinations. It tells how to start de-grassing your place by circling your trees with water stingy ground covers. Enjoyable and valuable.

The book has a laudable goal, but its recommendations rely far too heavily on introduced exotics. Using too many nonnatives isn't likely to succeed (witness the author's struggle with white clover) and runs against important currents of thought as voiced by people such as Douglas Tallamy. We need to reduce lawns and replace them with layers of mostly native grasses, perennials, shrubs, and trees.

Lest we feel this is the answer to all our mowing woes during a hot summer, the advicein this book can save us a lot of grief in the long run. It isn't as easy as one mightthink to go from 'grass to ground cover' without getting out of our depth. Are there anylocal community restrictions? Will the neighbors object? All points are considered.
