Great book

This is a well written book. However, there is a tendency amongst students who are bogged down on reading cases to pass over this sort of material too quickly, thus getting only a shallow apprehension of the subject. The author notes how words often do double and triple duty such that "You may want to join the bar but may be barred if you fail the bar and wind up tending bar or selling candy bars." Page 13. Thus, the author points out a critical feature of legal reasoning: "Legal rules characteristically require interpretation, which is an important part of legal reasoning." id. I recommend this book for honing those much needed skills in the practice of law and recommend that it be read slowly, not quickly. I also think a reader should consult Martin P. Golding's book "Legal Reasoning," Ruggero Aldisert's book "Logic for Lawyers," and Stephen Toulmin's book "The Uses of Argument." (Toulmin shows the uniqueness of legal reasoning in contrast with nonlegal reasoning).

A must for first-year law students or 1L's-to-be to put their learning into a context of legal theory. A good primer before moving onto reading Cardozo's The Nature of the Judicial Process and the Hart's The Concept of Law, both of which I'd recommend to 1L's interested in jurisprudence. Burton's primer is an introduction to how cases and rules relate in analogical and deductive legal reasoning; how legal reasons, conventions, policy, purposes, and not just rules alone, are used to help lawyers make predictions and judges make decisions. Finally, it concludes with a brief chapter on the legitimacy of our legal system. Core foundational ideas from which any law student begins to build his/her knowledge and understanding and then application of legal reasoning.

During my first year of law school I asked my "legal research and writing" professor for an excellent and clearly written introduction to legal reasoning. He recommended Professor Burton's book.This book will "demystify" all the bulls**t that first year professors want you to figure out for yourself. If all 1L's read this book, more law students will acquire a full skill-set during first year. Instead, the irrational legal educational system prefers to teach fear, insecurity, stress, and other unnecessary lessons that do not benefit law students, lawyers, or the public which we all aim to serve. Law professors shouldn't worry because they can still teach discipline, the art of inquiry, and HELP students LEARN.Caveat: This book is not the Holy Grail. You still have to read all your cases and study for your exams. However, you will better understand "The Big Picture" and write an excellent exam if you take the time to understand what Professor Burton has clearly imparted in this book.If you appreciate what I've said, feel free to ask me for more advice on how 1Ls and other law students can stop wasting time and reduce fear, insecurity, and stress.Damien

Double the size of the last volume I had. full of good charts and meds that to me only help me do a better job as a practitioner. I buy the lab coat version because I can't read the small print anymore in the pocket guides. Also books never run out of batteries or need a power source like an IPAD or computer.

In an age were the internet is at our fingertips and information is easy to obtain, I find that I turn to this book more frequently then I do the computer. It does not take long to look for a medication, they are divided in speciality or just look in the index. It may take the same amount of time to look for medication in this book, compared to turning on the computer but it is nice not having a sensory overload with all the information a internet search can present. A benefit of owning a book as there are many; is it may decrease the overall time you have to stare at a computer screen daily, never crashes or will not turn on/open because of technical difficulties, something to write on or use as a step stool when you need only 2 inches more to reach the medical supplies at the top of the supply closet

Its bigger than it should be, there's wasted space in the pages, the text is larger than it needs to be. Drug mechanisms aren't mentioned. Its really not lab jacket sized, maybe if you didn't have other books or paperwork you needed.

Lots of information in a pocket guide. I have been using the latest edition of this book for over 10 years. It is just as fast to retrieve information as with a smart phone app and the book has more information.

I've bought Pharmacopoeia books for years. First the smaller print one, but as I've aged, I needed the larger version. I sent this back - not because of the information, but because the manufacture has increased the size of the book and it's weight since my last purchase - which I think was two years ago. I know a lot of medications have come out since then, but I know rely on other sources for medication use.

I purchased both this and the pocket version, ended up keeping this one. It's about the size of a side pocket on a lab coat. It has more info than the smaller one. (PA student)

Best pharmacology reference. It is very user friendly and easy to read and provides tons of information such as general cost and pregnancy and lactation safety.

About the Author

Danny Korman is just as likely to ride his bike as he is to walk around Cincinnati. Why not? Car-free most of his life after sending several cars to the junkyard at an early age, he rarely tires of this primal way of getting around his hometown. Danny nurtures his passions while running the general store Park + Vine in Over-the-Rhine, which he opened in summer 2007 on Vine Street before moving to Main Street in October 2010. After graduating from the school of planning at the University of Cincinnati in 1991 and studying preservation planning at Pratt Institute Brooklyn, NY in 1997, Danny worked a bunch of different jobs focused on Main Street revitalization, tourism and bicycling advocacy in Ohio, Kentucky, New York and Illinois. Danny is a big architecture buff, urban explorer, nature lover, believer in supporting local economies and steward for the environment and animals. Katie Meyer, a native of Covington's Old Seminary Square neighborhood, has been thinking about the unique culture and challenges facing Covington for a long time. After earning her M.S. in Urban Policy Analysis and Management from the New School in New York City, Katie returned to Kentucky in 2007 to work for Kentucky Housing Corporation as a Performance Analyst. Two years later she was hired on by the City of Covington to run Renaissance Covington, Inc., a non-profit aimed at downtown revitalization. In 2012, Katie, along with partners, opened Covington's art and music bar, Pike Street Lounge. In addition to learning and loving the local music scene, Katie enjoys traveling, bicycling, and urban exploration. Katie lives with her partner Bonnie and two beagles in the Austinburg neighborhood of Covington.

I gifted this to my parents who love to walk and hike and explore. They absolutely love the guided walks in this book! They say they are very detailed and they are learning so many interesting things about parts of the city that they have both lived in their entire lives! My mom loves it so much she is buying a copy for a friend.

Love this book. Returned to Cincinnati after some 45 years away and just reading about all the fascinating neighborhoods reintroduces me to my childhood home. Nest book, include Anderson Township and Mt. Washington.

We have walked four of these neighborhoods and look forward to many more. The interesting thing us that we are very familiar with these areas but have never walked them as extensively as this book requires. We are amazed at what we've seen and what we've learned. When we travel, we always make a point to walk around the cities we visit. Now we are learning and seeing new things about the city we've called home for 45 years. An amazing resource!

I gave this as a gift and the recipient loved it. I loved it the little I read, too, while flipping through it prior to gifting. Nice, walkable tours, with lots of information. A great resource to have if you're visiting or live in the Greater Cincinnati area. I live in Northern KY (as does the recipient of the gift) and was especially glad to see a nice section devoted to Northern KY.

Loved this book....clear cut directions and included places to snack or drink or eat(always a requirement on our walking tours). Friends and I have done several walking tours on our own of this city but this is perfect with many places and information we couldnt find consolidated elsewhere.
