Oh! What a wonderful book! I could not put it down. The Second Mrs. Hockaday was about a seventeen year old girl who marries an older man and has two days with him before he is called back to fight for the South in the Civil War. His young wife, Placidia, is left alone with a few slaves to care for her infant stepson and manage Major Hockaday's 300 acre farm. The story is told primarily through diary entries and correspondances between Placidia and her cousin.Near the beginning, we learn that Placidia has been arrested for a crime. We don't know what has happened. Through the various letters, we learn what she has been through in trying to maintain her home, and the terrible trials she has suffered. The book is mezmerizing. The language of the era and of the time rings completely true, and is both entertaining and enlightening. This is a book which will stay with me for a long time. I highly recommend it.

The Second Mrs. Hockaday by Susan Rivers254 pagesWhat’s it about? Major Gryffth Hockaday is on a short leave from the Civil War when he meets 17-year-old Placidia. In a whirlwind romance they are quickly married and immediately return to his farm. 48 hours after returning home he is called back to duty. Placidia is left to care for his young son, a few slaves, and the farm while the war rages on. Two years later, when the war ends, Major Hockaday returns to find Placicia accused of not only having had a baby while he was gone, but also murdering the baby. What really happened? What did it make me think about? What a pleasant surprise this little book was! It is the best page-turner I have read in a while. I could not put it down. The book is written as a series of letters and you just want to know more. Based on a true story, this novel illuminates what many women may have faced in the South during the Civil War.Should I read it? This novel combines history, great characters, and a compelling mystery to make for one good story! Any fan of historical fiction should pick this book up.Quote- “In marveling at how transformed he is, I strive to keep in mind that I am changed quite as totally as the major. It is challenging to remember the child who stood up before Rev. Poteat two years ago with a handful of spring flowers and a joyous heart, who trusted her fate to the good luck she had been born with and to a man blown into her path by the prevailing winds.”If you like this try-Days Without End by Sebastian BarryUnderground Railroad by Colson WhiteheadLincoln in the Bardo by George SaundersMarch by Geraldine Brooks

I was entranced from page one, and I found myself highlighting (and quoting to others), more passages than I can track or count! I found the story, the prose, the diction and the voices, more engaging than anything I have read in a very long time.

I could not put this book down after reading the first few pages. I felt an instant connection to Dia and wanted someone to help her out of her legal predicament. In my opinion the structure of the novel is as fascinating as the story it tells. I'm looking forward to Susan Rivers next well researched book.

As a Southerner I see the the effects of the country as portrayed in this novel still with us today. As a woman I feel so drawn to Placidia Hockaday as she struggles to hold on to a relationship that had not had time to develop. And wonder how she could have trusted her husband so completely. I admired her bravery (I doubt she would have tho't of herself as brave), her strength of character, and her passion. This was such a good book, and all the people in it were so real to me. One of the best books I've read this year. Thanks

This book was a surprise to me. It was a book club choice, so I didn’t pick it for myself. It is not written in the style of today, it felt like going back in time. It’s narrative is melancholy on the whole. It deals with the harsh realities of the post civil war south and the life that was lived mostly by people who were not on the battlefield, but who were severely affected by it nonetheless. It is a mesmerizing tale, but not a cheery one. It started out a little slow for me, but hang in there you will be rewarded. One of the most absorbing books I’ve read in years. If you are looking for light reading, pass this up. But you will possibly have missed one of the best written books of the decade.

I liked the format of the book -mostly written as letters. The mystery revolves around a baby being born, and that was the hook that held my attention. There were parts of the story that left question marks. This really is not a about slavery or even the Cival War. It is about a very young wife trying to survive on a farm in the South in 1864 and 1865. The book skips to later years when the main character's children have grown. The novel includes slaves, rape, hard work, children, cruelty, love, and more. Like I wrote - it is a quick read, and the story- in places -just did not ring true, but the mystery kept me involved. For that reason, the book deserves an A+

Although this book is extremely well written, I'm giving it four stars. I felt there was a lot left to be desired in the plot. There is an overall mystery in the book, that is given a one page explanation, and I gotta say, the way it was explained kinda made no sense. I guess if she would have just told her husband it would have made a very short story, but when he finds out the truth, it is so anticlimactic that I was frustrated. The author strings us along, only to finish the book by giving us a crime committed by a character that was mentioned in a few paragraphs earlier in the book that the audience forgot about, but perhaps that's what we were meant to do. Overall, I liked this book, and I would recommend. I just hope the author doesn't get into mysteries. They'll be a snore for sure.

Smart Ass: How a Donkey Challenged Me to Accept His True Nature & Rediscover My Own, by Margaret Winslow

Review

“This unusual, engaging story of a woman and her donkey will undoubtedly win many hearts.” — Publishers Weekly “Winslow’s writing is at times laugh-out-loud funny, including her recollections of riding Caleb through what she thought was an abandoned psychiatric center and competing in a dressage competition. It is also poignant as she struggles with how best to train with Caleb while maintaining a challenging work-life balance. A moving and humorous account of what a woman learned about herself as she trained a donkey.” — Booklist “Adoption — be it of a cat, a child, or in Margaret Winslow’s case, a donkey — demands time, trust, and the flexibility to alter one’s expectations. This tender story of a frustrated academic and an indomitable beast delivers the drama of this struggle and, ultimately, the gift of love.” — Tina Traster, author of Rescuing Julia Twice and director/producer of the documentary Catnip Nation “Laugh and cry as Margaret Winslow parks her ego to accept the honest reflection a donkey provides — endearing comedy and blatant humiliation.” — Karlene Stange, DVM, author of The Spiritual Nature of Animals “A testament to the power of love and forgiveness, no matter how long humans take to really hear what animals tell them from deep within their hearts. A complex story with an ultimately simple message, Smart Ass has a happy and touching ending for both Caleb and his finally centered human.” — Best Friends Magazine “Donkeys are amazing animal beings. Twice my life was changed by an up-close-and-personal meeting with a donkey who seemed to know precisely what I was thinking and feeling. So I fully understand Margaret Winslow’s being rescued by Caleb’s charm, presence, and sense of humor, along with his ability to trust and to forgive. I hope Smart Ass enjoys a broad global audience because there are so many life lessons to be learned from the nonhuman animals who bless our lives if we allow them in.” — Marc Bekoff, PhD, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals “I love Margaret Winslow’s book and all it teaches us about the true nature of life, from the power of love to the reality of animal communication. More than anything, Smart Ass teaches us about reverence for life.” — Dr. Bernie S. Siegel, author of Love, Animals & Miracles and 365 Prescriptions for the Soul “No creatures are more misunderstood than donkeys. They challenge us to look inside ourselves for the answers to their problems, and in doing so they help us grow as humans. Every donkey will take you on a journey of self-discovery if you let them, and Caleb is no different. He has a message for you about the way we treat and respect animals, each other, and ourselves. Heartbreaking, funny, encouraging, and enlightening, Smart Ass is a beautifully written story that questions our own stubbornness as a species and asks us to learn how to trust ourselves.” — Ben Hart, animal behaviorist and trainer at Hart’s Horsemanship and the Donkey Sanctuary “Smart Ass inspires us with a delightful odd-couple relationship between a white donkey and a middle-aged college professor, a grand story of humorous, wise insights into the challenges and rewards of following one’s unlikely hopes and dreams. Margaret Winslow’s story of Caleb the donkey unfolds as a mythic tale — wild, tender, and at times dangerous — of a woman who faces midlife issues by purchasing a stubborn, willful, and affectionate long-eared member of the equine family. Readers travel the rocky trail of their mutual life journeys, hammering out hard-won accomplishments of cross-species communication and finally arriving at a new and better way of living through loyalty to one’s true self.” — Trish Broersma, author of Riding into Your Mythic Life “Smart Ass is a remarkable, finely written memoir with both an engaging story and a surprising lesson. As author Margaret Winslow pursues her dream and learns to listen to her seven-hundred-pound donkey, she learns to listen to her true self. The chapters flow forward with skillfully crafted scenes, leading the reader to root for both Margaret and Caleb — and finally to share in their lifelong lesson of trust and forgiveness.” — Susan M. Tiberghien, author of One Year to a Writing Life

Smart Ass is a truly remarkable book, by a remarkable woman, about a remarkable donkey. It is an exploration of the affinity between human and beast, and a portrait of intellect versus obstinacy. Ultimately, Margie Winslow’s merry masterpiece is a thinly veiled autobiography about a woman who discovers the blessings of perseverance and the serenity of accommodation.Ms. Winslow’s experience teaching college students informed her approach to training her donkey. Antibodies developed against unhinged university administrators helped her defeat the storm trooper tactics of her donkey’s boot camp trainer. Throughout, the author retains her sense of humor, as in: “Until then I didn’t even know that donkeys could gallop.” She jokes that she bought her donkey, Caleb, on Ebray. Yes, Caleb does bite the Virgin Mary’s finger when he’s recruited for the Bethlehem manger scene, and yes, he does trample the author, quite possibly intentionally. But in her telling, these are mere speed bumps in a story told in donkey years, in contrast to horse months.Ms. Winslow’s literary skills (truly rare for a geologist) are on display as the reader listens in on her conversations with Caleb. She communicates with him in narrative non-fiction, and he responds with interior monologue. Lest a cynical reader suspect that animals are incapable of converting thoughts to words, Ms. Winslow points out that there are two speaking parts for animals in the Bible, one by a serpent and the other by, yes, a donkey. In the fullness of time, and at his own deliberate pace, Caleb becomes a successful, if erratic, show donkey. The reader marvels at his donkey luck for having crossed paths with such a loving, virtuous, and determined woman. The irony is that she considers herself equally lucky.

The type of book you can't put down once you begin. Particularly enjoyable because the focus was on such an interesting animal, as an individual - Caleb - and as a type - donkey, AND because it was also about person's struggle to communicate and connect in a meaningful relationship. Good psychological elements in the telling of this adventure.

I LOVED this book, a true story of a woman and her up and down experiences with a white donkey that she wants very much for a friend. Well written, sometimes humorous and poignant, always fascinating. It reminded me a bit of the novel, Miss Royal's Mules. I'll be looking for other books by the author.

I thought I would enjoy this book more than I did. I kept being shocked how someone so educated could seemingly be so naive about common sense situations. I did admire her perseverance but I feel the bumbling surely was traumatic for both human and donkey and delayed the positive outcome.

Fun, insightful, touching... a delightful description of her journey through life with Caleb the Donkey. I could hardly put the book down - in this, my second time through it! You MUST buy this book!

So well written and honest. There were moments I laughed out loud so hard and others it really made me think. Highly recommend this book to anyone interested in donkeys, who they really are and what it's like to have one in your life! :)

Full disclosure: I also have a donkey and have had some of the challenges and blessings described by the author. My "review" is therefore highly subjective, as I had many personal reasons for especially understanding and empathizing with the author's observations. A reader without such background experience might not as fully enjoy or appreciate some aspects of the author's narrative, although the personal conclusions about what the author gained from her experience has universal value. Why don't more colleges graduate donkeys? It's because no one likes a smart ass! This punch line was the only donkey joke the author knew when she started what became quite an adventure for her. In somewhat of a mid-career crisis, this published author, field geologist and university professor, decides to obtain a donkey and learn how to ride it. If you've ever "heard of "equine assisted therapy," then you'll not be surprised that our author was surprised to discover just how easily this donkey could hold up a mirror to her and make her reconsider, more than once, her opinion of herself. The author had plenty of help. One of the dimensions to her story is how her relationships with the owners of riding academies and donkey institutes looked after the well being of both donkey and student. There were concerns about the boundaries of the author's abilities. There were concerns about the difference between the author's expectations and the donkey's nature. There were concerns about the degree to which this particular donkey's expression of donkey's nature would be compatible with the goals the would be rider had for her donkey. There were concerns about whether or not the author was making the best use of her time and resources. It was a story about the universal dilemma: When to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. I've wandered and wondered in this dilemma myself as my own story of becoming an "owner" of a donkey, not to mention horses, goats and geese with grand expectations of cross-species collaboration, without the foggiest notion of the skill set involved in becoming an animal "trainer," not to mention "communicator." Sometimes the folding involves letting go of certain assumptions about the exact form in which one's goals will be realized. Sometimes we get what we are after, and are lucky it turned out to be different than what we thought we were aiming for. If you have struggled with a goal, n, ot achieving what you were aiming for after a lot of effort, wondering whether or not to give it up, and if you are open to the possibility that you are doing better than you think, only toward a goal differnt than you had originally imagined, then you will feel in good company as you accompany the author as she journeys towards a transformed self concept as a result of embracing her ass exactly as it was.
