I discovered this "translation" by accident on BibleGateway, or, as Phillip Goble might "translate" it, "Torah Basa'ar" when I clicked "view all translations" for Luke 4:22 while working on Luke 4:21-30. My first clue that something was off was that a supposedly "Orthodox Jewish Bible" was translating the New Testament. Orthodox Jews translating the New Testament? How very odd. I was familiar with the JPS Torah, published by the Jewish Publication Society, but I thought they only used the Hebrew Bible. So I clicked through to view the whole pericope I was looking at. Imagine my surprise to find in verse 21, where the Greek verbs are masculine singular to imply that the person acting was Jesus, and there were no nouns, Goble had unaccountably translated *nothing* as "Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach"!In English, we would have to say "he" or "him" to make that sentence make sense, but replacing an implied "he" with a transliterated "Rabbi King Messiah" is preposterous. Based on other reviews, I'm going to assume that it doesn't get better in other places.Imagine, then, how surprised I *wasn't* to learn that Gobles is a graduate of Fuller Theological Seminary. I hope Fuller is sufficiently embarrassed at him, and I wish I hadn't read that he spent thirty years of his life dedicated to this monstrosity of a pseudo-translation masquerading as an "Orthodox Jewish" translation of the Bible. It's neither Orthodox Jewish, nor Jewish, and barely a translation. I would not recommend it to anyone except as an example of what not to do.I "purchased" a Kindle copy so I could write a review as a verified purchaser. It cost me $0, which was significantly more than the so-called "Orthodox Jewish Bible" was worth.

I purchased this for my kindle fire because I saw a copy online at Biblegateway.com - - the version on the Bible gateway site has a full content by books and verses. This does not. How ever in the world would someone find something in a "reference" book/bible without a table to contents. I didn't realize this fact until I had this version for several days. I wanted to look at another book and found no way to do it. Seriously, how useful would this be if you could not pinpoint a certain page, book, verse. What a worthless and LAZY way of putting this on the market. I wanted to be able to highlight and underline and bookmark. That is the reason I purchased this Phillip Goble production. The money was not much. But there is no reason on earth that the contents couldn't be available as well. JUNK, LAZY, and right next door to cheating the customer. The content is fine and for that it gets the one star. But is not user friendly so what other good is it. I have my own versions in e-form and in print form. This will never be used again. I would really like to see an update so that this could have a potential of 4 or 5 stars.

The print is small and I didn't realize that it was a paperback book. I really don't like paperback bibles. It also doesn't separate books by using headings and the Headings it does have are not in English. I have many Hebrew bibles to enable me to write in some headings but it is not very easy to use this version though informative. I think that they shouldn't have mixed Yiddish with Hebrew. One or the other would have been better. The font is very small and there is not much space between the lines of print. So. it is not a large book but larger than a normal paperback. Bible Gateway represents a better view of the books in this bible. Overall, I will utilize this as another book in my Hebrew Bible collection. I also use the JPS and other bibles for different perspectives.

A great translation with a an distinctly Jewish flair, combining English with Hebrew - or is that Hebrew with English. A great Bible!

So thankful I purchased this. Already my knowledge of Hebrew is increasing. This translation is adding depth and width to my growing understanding of Torah.

Not accurately translated

What a labor of love! Thank you for this wonderful translation! I only wish this was available in large print. Thank you!

My only complaint is that there is no way to get to a book or chapter without thumbing through the whole Bible. You would have to memorize the LOC number for each book, or just guess at it. I'm using the iPad Kendal app. They should have made a table of contents with each book that you tap on.

Down the Yukon, by Will Hobbs

From School Library Journal

Grade 5 Up-In this sequel to Jason's Gold (Morrow, 1999), 16-year-old Jason Hawthorn endures even more hardships in the Yukon. His brother Ethan loses their sawmill business to swindlers in a poker game and the new settlement of Dawson City is devastated by fire. Jamie Dunavant returns, still Jason's girlfriend. When a contest involving a race to Nome is announced, the two of them decide to enter in hopes of winning the $20,000 prize money to buy back the sawmill. The pace of the novel picks up dramatically as the race begins. Accompanied by Ethan's affectionate mutt, Burnt Paw, Jason and Jamie aim to outpaddle over 300 entrants down the Yukon but adventure gives way to survival when the sawmill swindlers sabotage their canoe. It is a suspenseful trek over land and sea as the teens race the bad guys to the finish line, and a few conveniences make for a happy-ever-after ending. Swedish immigrants, Eskimos, and a Russian priest are minor characters who befriend the heroes and give a real flavor of Alaska in the late 1800s. An appended author's note further separates fact from fiction. More exciting than its predecessor, this bookwould make a great read-aloud.Vicki Reutter, Cazenovia High School, NY Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. Fans of Hobbs' action-packed historical adventure novels will welcome this sequel to Jason's Gold (1999). When fire destroys much of the Canadian gold rush town where the Hawthorne brothers live, a shady character named Donner takes over their mill, and miners leave to find gold in Alaska, Jason decides to compete in a race to the new gold fields. With him in the contest are Jamie, the plucky young lady who appeared in Jason's Gold, and a mongrel dog, Burnt Paw. As if river travel, grizzly bears, a kayak journey across open sea, and a budding romance aren't enough, Jason and Jamie must also deal with ruthless Donner, their main competition in the race. The ending, though predictable, features an appropriate twist. Hobbs includes an epilogue about Jason and Jamie, notes on the historical basis for some of story's characters and events, and a map. Readers looking for an exciting adventure won't be disappointed. Catherine AndronikCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

This book has an interesting storyline and I wanted to love it but the author adds in too much historical detail so that the book reads like a fast paced, enjoyable book at times and a history textbook at others. Made it through about five chapters before giving up on it.

I bought these to use with my middle school students. They loved the story that Will Hobbs crafted. The story allows for a variety of connections to geography and history and my students loved researching the events and placed named in the book.

Love the bookðŸ’ΕΎ If you love historical fiction this is great!!! I recommend reading Jasons Gold first though

This was purchased for my 12 year old son for school. It is a great story and fun to read.

My son read Jason's Gold in school and couldn't wait to get this, it's not so easily found in the stores

Cool stuff. Just trying to get to twenty words. But yeah. Good book. Five stars. Five words are right here.

Reason for Reading: After reading Jason's Gold, I promised ds I would read the sequel to him sometime and here we are finally getting to it. A year and a half later! But he's more mature for Hobbs now and he wants me to read more books by him.Though the word Yukon is in the title, it refers to the river not the territory, so don't mistake this book as taking place in Canada. The first in this series (and I'd say it's important to read them in order to get the full value of this sequel) takes places entirely in Canada while this one takes place entirely in Alaska, except for the beginning couple of chapters. Starting six months after the end of Jason's Gold this book has Jason and Jamie entering a race from Dawson City to Nome to win the grand prize of $20,000 which readers of the first book will know why they need the money.Another well-written adventure with much descriptive language of the land and one gets a great feel for being there with them. Jason and Jamie are written as equals, there is hardly any distinction that they are male and female, though Hobbs does manage to write in an already affirmed relationship that they are a couple with a distinct future together. The majority of the book details their trip down the river and the obstacles they face along the way including bad guy Cornelius Donner from the first book. Touches upon the Nome, Alaska gold rush to a small extent, giving enough information to impart what it was like there at that time but this book concentrates more on the fictional story and the geographical location than the historical content as did Jason's Gold. A rip-roaring read for those who love adventure, survival or wilderness living. The book packs a walloping adrenaline filled climax that is sure to have you wanting to read more Will Hobbs. This mum and son are certainly looking forward to more!

It's about a boy named Jason and his brothers, living in Dawson City. They have their own sawmill called Hawthorn Brothers Sawmill, where they work to make a living. One day all of the brothers were at a place eating, and a guy starts to kick this dog sitting there, so Ethan, the oldest brother, tells the man not to kick the dog. They got into a pushing match, but somebody in the crowd yelled at Ethan not to fight the guy, because he was pushing a former boxer Sydney Mauler. Then somebody said they should have a boxing match, and they had one two weeks later. Ethan ended up winning and becoming famous. He stopped working at the mill and started to drink and gamble a lot. He was winning everyday, and then one day he started to lose, and everyday he lost more and more until he was broke. Then a lawyer took their mill by having Ethan sing a paper when he was drunk, so they lost their mill. Jason's old friend Jamie Dunavant comes back to Dawson City and they fall in love. Jason told her he was going to Nome for to make money to buy the mill back. Jamie then found a contest. It was a race to Nome for two people and $20,000 the prize. It would be able to buy the mill back. So can Jamie and Jason win the race and get the mill back? You'll have to read the book to find out. The parts I liked were that there was a lot of adventure and I like adventure books. The parts I didn't like were that it was kind of a love story and there were some boring parts. I would recommend this book to people who like adventure and love stories too. It`s the sequel of Jason's Gold, so if you liked that then you'll like this

"One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 1993""Khong's interviews and newly declassified documents make a compelling case the American decision-makers in 1965 used historical analogies not only to justify decisions but to make them, most notably in the process of rejecting options." One the best Theory development books I have. This book is most recommended for students of Qualitative Reseach methods, to learn how to develop a comparative case study method and of course - how to project from history to current events

great

This is a groundbreaking book in the debate over political decision-makers’ use of historical analogies. Khong’s thesis states that policymakers do not merely use convenient historical analogies to justify their actions but perform specific cognitive and information processing tasks using the most vivid analogies without even realizing it. The book’s focus is on the Johnson administration’s decision to intervene in Vietnam using analogies from Munich, Korea, and Dien Bien Phu as historical guides.Khong asserts that the decision to intervene in Vietnam was the inevitable outgrowth of the assumptions of the day: containment, the domino theory, etc., and therefor was not a hypocritical use of analogies to justify aggression. Policymakers, like all humans transform selected aspects of historical events into schema which influences all decisions. Because it is subconscious, historical events are seldom probed for accuracy. In my own research, I see analogies to Neville Chamberlain’s disastrous pact with Hitler in Munich, 1938 used to justify all kinds of actions. This work is very useful and should be thoroughly internalized by decision-makers and those who work for them. In its framework, it is more “explicitly psychological” than other similar works. I assess Khong’s work to be “analogous” (no pun intended) to the lessons of the Iraq War, fought years after this book’s publication. For now, at least, the result of the Iraq War, like Vietnam, is so bereft of consensus that no clear-cut analogies can be made.

Khong clearly and succinctly details the role of lessons from history, especially the 1930s, in the decision to escalate the war in Vietnam. His analysis is thorough, relying on archival research. In approach, it is similar to my Rolling the Iron Dice, which analyzes the use of historical analogies by British and American decision makers during four crises in the 1950s: Korea, Iran (1951-3), Suez and Lebanon-Jordan (1958). Both analyze the role of lessons from history, although my work also shows the types of leaders and situations, in which historical analogies are used.Rolling the Iron Dice: Historical Analogies and Decisions to Use Military Force in Regional Contingencies (Contributions in Military Studies)
