There's no way for me to do this wise book justice, but it's filled with thought-provoking reality checks about how much closer we get to God through relationships rather than organizations and programs.Jacobsen reminded me of the power of deep, Jesus-focused relationships: friendships that happen naturally and grow and develop over time around this one unifying pursuit. Living this way can be chaotic and messy, but is ultimately redemptive because God knows how to sort out our messes.I'm not convinced that we need to completely abolish meeting weekly as a church, or during the week in groups to pray, consider the Bible, etc. (particularly here in greater Boston, where if something isn't a recurring event, it takes three weeks to find a time to get together). But I love the way he prioritizes relationships over programs. I'd recommend this book to anyone who feels like church has become a second job because you're there 20+ hours a week doing programs and classes.
This book has summed up everything I've had rolling around inside for years. It's so wonderful to see it all put to print and expressed so beautifully.I spent 12 years in what proved to be an abusive church, and once out, quite a few years ago, I started my journey out of the man-made institution and into the real Church. I initially found a host of books on the small church movement which, on the surface, looked very promising. But that's just not happening out here, and as Wayne says, it can so easily turn into just another man-made system that will eventually leave God out of the equation. This book is what put my thinking over the top, out of man's big ideas and into the Kingdom of God which is within us (Lk 17:21).Yes, there will be opposition from traditionalists, but that's to be expected. Change comes hard, but the new wineskin is so exciting!The only complaint I would have is that I wish he'd included more scripture references on the passages he is referring to. I like to see it for myself, and I still haven't found a couple of them. But that being said, I still haven't finished the book; I keep going back and underlining more.It's so completely freeing to realize that the systems of man aren't God's perfect plan, even though He's used them for centuries. I've found Church. Thank you, Wayne!!
I read a lot of books on Christian spirituality and spiritual formation (discipleship or apprenticeship to Jesus). This offering by Wayne Jacobsen is in a category by itself in my estimation? It touches on many aspects and current trends in Christianity and "church". For my wife and I it affirms, confirms and informs the season of life in Christ that we find ourselves in currently, (I'm 65, she is 57, kids raised and gifting us with grandchildren). This book will be a tough read for dedicated and committed traditional institutional church folk (we once were). But it will be a great blessing for those seeking the "more" that Christ promised and continues to offer.
I loved this book. It left me with the freedom enjoy a Sunday meeting or not. Church isn't the building, it's interaction. It's a great book and what I really loved is that he doesn't bash the traditional building service, as seen mostly in America today, and doesn't make it seem like you have to make a choice. Jacobsen allows you to feel free either way, and encourages you to see where else you may already be having church and not even realizing it.
Wayne has a way of speaking this message with truth and grace, no toxic negativity towards the church building or those who choose to gather there. He has broadened the scope of my misconceptions in offering a larger view that goes beyond the walls of corporate church. A breath of fresh air. Throughout the book I felt burdens my unchurched heart has carried for decades being lifted in a way nothing else has. I have and will continue to recommend this book to people who are seeking release from the heavy yoke of religion and looking for the unforced rhythm's of grace the One we live in and lives in us is known for. Thank you, Wayne!
This is a wonderful book if you are among the few who see through the contemporary church culture of an uber-pastor and a praise team, of nickels and noses, and worldly living, and recognize that there must be more. If your heart yearns for all that Jesus died for and is aching to realize it - press on. The upward call of God in Christ isn't found in any institution. It is an inner journey that we must be willing to start alone and let the Head build in and through us. We are not saved to serve the church but to be the church as we serve its only Head.
I really enjoyed the stories and insight about the Church Jesus is building. It is not a building or denomination, but a group of people who love God and are focused on Christ. Formal meetings at set times and in set places do not constitute the Church. When we keep our eyes on Jesus and allow his love to flow through us to those God brings into our lives, we are being the church. It is not sitting in meetings, letting a select few participate in an organized service. The author makes this book interesting and informative, and does not show any condemnation to those who may see things differently.
One of the recurring themes in Wayne's writing is that Church as the people of God is a life embedded entity. It seems the minute we extricate it into a programmatic, theological or event-based entity, it becomes artificial or contrived. This resonates with me personally but would certainly frustrate others. Wayne's answer to the ills of the North American audience church is to reclaim life and relationships as a primary context in which God builds His Church as only He can.I believe that Wayne's perspective provides gracious spaciousness for those who feel confined by church as we have known it.
