Review

Praise for From Holmes to Sherlock:One of the Washington Post’s 50 notable works of nonfiction in 2017, a Crime Lady best book of the year, and one of Ashwin Sanghi’s 5 favorite books of the year (Deccan Herald)A Publishers Weekly Top 10 in Essays & Literary Criticism for fall 2017“If you love Sherlock Holmes, you’ll love this book . . . Mattias Bostrom’s From Holmes to Sherlock is the best account of Baker Street mania ever written. Really . . . what Bostrom has accomplished supremely well is to relate, as his subtitle proclaims, ‘the story of the men and women who created an icon.’ In effect, he shows us how Sherlock Holmes enchanted the world.”―Michael Dirda, Washington Post“A timely overview of the great detective’s actual genesis and multiple transformation as a mass cultural icon . . . Riveting . . . Boström has expertly unearthed entertaining instances of the sleuth’s diverse appearances in all media, throughout the world . . . [A] wonderfully entertaining history.”―Michael Saler, Wall Street Journal“From Holmes to Sherlock celebrates the versatility of one of fiction’s most beloved characters . . . terrific . . . Mattias Boström has written a necessary addition to any Baker Street library.”―Steve Donoghue, Christian Science Monitor“For Sherlock Holmes buffs, there’s a new book I imagine is indispensable . . . Boström’s achievement is staggering and endearingly gossipy. It’s like eating popcorn and you learn a whole lot of cool stuff along the way.”―Nicholas Meyer“Mattias Boström has done the impossible―encapsulated the journey of Sherlock Holmes from international literary superstar to modern day television hero. Meticulous, charming and, best of all, adoring of the original.”―Lyndsay Faye, author of The Whole Art of Detection“Just when you think you’ve read every great book about the history of Doyle and Holmes, Mattias Boström reveals startling new layers to the famous adventures of the greatest detective of all time. Written with skill, wit, and unmatched expertise, From Holmes to Sherlock is the new standard in the complete history of not only the original Doyle stories, but literally every adaptation, too.”―Ryan Britt, author of Luke Skywalker Can't Read“A breathtakingly comprehensive study of a literary phenomenon . . . Mattias Boström has given us an epic narrative that despite its length and sheer poundage in paperback is unputdownable. Bravo.”―New York Journal of Books“One of my favorite books of the year . . . you will enjoy Boström's book enormously. It's a delight to read, narrative history paced like a suspense novel . . . What I loved most about From Holmes to Sherlock is that you don't have to be a Sherlock Holmes expert to enjoy it.”―Sarah Weinman, Crime Lady“Boström, a Swedish master of Sherlockiana, whose writings during some thirty years of research is uncontestedly award-winning, reveals how each generation has a different slant, perhaps more nuanced, on the great detective.”―Decatur Daily“Even the most assiduous Sherlockian can admit that the endless reinvention and lasting pop-cultural impact of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's creation was not necessarily elementary. As a study in Sherlock, the case of the big business of public frenzies, literary estates and endless adaptations finally gets solved.”―Globe & Mail (Toronto), “gifts for every type of book lover on your list”“A fascinating tale that brings together everything you thought you knew about Sherlock Holmes, and then some . . . both a work of deep scholarship and a disarmingly racy read.”―Sydney Morning Herald (Australia)“Boström provides a unique approach to the history of the Sherlock Holmes phenomenon that had me turning all 500 pages of this tome with interest.”―Steve Steinbock, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, 5 stars“Conan Doyle’s building of the character has never been better told, and the peregrinations of the copyrights down through the years form virtually a novel in itself.”―Nick Murray, Financial Advisor, “books of the year 2017”“[Boström] comes up with some intriguing and fresh details . . . The canon of critical and biographical material on Holmes and Doyle is massive, of course, but even so, this latest entry makes a significant contribution to our understanding of how a bloodhound called Sherlock took over the world. ”―Booklist (starred review)“A remarkable tour of Sherlock facts and myths . . . Bostrom's lively narration makes this hefty book feel just as fun as the original detective adventures. It is detailed but never boring, and is probably the only book over 200 pages that I have read in one sitting (do or do not try this at home).”―Politics and Prose“Entertaining, enlightening . . . Each chapter is short, written in a punchy, eavesdropping style, so that even if you don’t know the protagonists, their battles, failures and successes read like mini-mysteries . . . The chapters here are like a bag of salted peanuts―you can’t stop at one.”―Winnipeg Free Press“A spirited account of how Sherlock became a household name . . . Boström's weaving of the Holmes story into the larger one of popular culture and the mass-entertainment industry is the best part of this very good book. For fans of literature, film history, and Conan Doyle alike, a fine complement to the best works of Sherlock-iana.”―Kirkus Reviews“Boström’s important and entertaining book should be read by all Holmes fans.”―Randall Stock, Best of Sherlock, 2017 best books about Holmes & Conan Doyle“A fascinating treatment of Doyle’s creation of Holmes and the way in which it became such a popular culture juggernaut, sometimes in spite of Doyle’s descendants.”―Max Allan Collins“Boström has succeeded masterfully in doing something no one has hitherto dared try: telling the whole Sherlock Holmes 'story.' It is an extraordinary tale.”―Nicholas Utechin, editor of the Sherlock Holmes Journal, 1976-2006“When next asked why you so love Sherlock Holmes, hand your interrogator a copy of this work.”―Steven Rothman, Baker Street Journal“Absolutely outstanding . . . and unlikely ever to be surpassed in depth, scope, dedication, intelligent enthusiasm, readability and all the qualities that make a book worthwhile is Mattias Boström’s masterpiece From Holmes to Sherlock.”―Roger Johnson, Sherlock Holmes Journal"This ambitious work charting the history of Sherlock Holmes and Sherlockiana in all of its guises is the most important book on the Sherlockian bookshelf in the past several years. Mattias's research is impressive as is his breadth of knowledge.”―Mark Alberstat, editor of Canadian Holmes“Superb! I am deeply in awe of Mr Boström’s comprehensive research, his meticulous selection and his enticing presentation. Mattias Boström is one of a select group of really important Holmesian/Doylean scholars.”―Roger Johnson, editor of the Sherlock Holmes Journal, coauthor of the Sherlock Holmes Miscellany“From Holmes to Sherlock will be one of the four or five most important books among the scores of nonfiction volumes about Sherlock Holmes, and it’s easy and entertaining reading as well.”―Christopher Redmond, editor of Sherlockian.net“ [From Holmes to Sherlock] explores the world’s continuing fascination with fiction’s leading detective hero. The informal, accessible style of Gallagher’s translation makes for an easy, if lengthy, read.”―Publishers Weekly“In brief, novelistic chapters, Boström supplies a well-researched, chronological approach to the history. To be enjoyed by Sherlockians everywhere, this title makes it clear that Holmes's story is far from over.”―Library Journal “ [A] unique, incredibly ambitious and wide-ranging volume . . . While it reads like a work of fiction, almost a literary mystery, it is a rich tapestry, filled with real-world heroes and villains . . . I can’t recommend this book highly enough . . . A must-read for anyone with an interest in the character, the history or the fandom surrounding him.”―Canadian Holmes“Well written and recommended.”―Peter E. Blau, Scuttlebutt newsletter“[An] excellent book.”―Sherlock Holmes Society of London newsletter“One of the most original and needed Sherlockian books to appear for some years . . . Probably the most interesting book on the world of Sherlockiana to emerge in the 21st century.”―Alistair Duncan, Doyleockian“No Sherlockian year in review will be complete this year without mention of this book. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: this book should be in every Sherlockian collection.”―Interesting though Elementary“Mattias Boström . . . [has] written a book about Sherlock Holmes that is head and shoulders above anything we’ve seen lately . . . with a style and grace that leaves one nearly speechless.”―Timothy J. Johnson, Curator of Special Collections and Rare Books, E. W. McDiarmid Curator of the Sherlock Holmes Collections

As a life-long Sherlock Holmes fan (well, at least since Junior High School when I read The Hound of the Baskervilles), I have always been tangentially interested in both the stories and, more recently, what others thought abut the stories. This book gives one of the best overall views of the challenges that Doyle underwent and how they impacted the writing of the stories. It also goes into a great amount of depth into how grew around the world and those who were responsible for that growth. This book will go a long way to enhance your enjoyment of the original adventures.

Just finished this massive tome, and like the very best historical books, it has led me down the path of wanting to read so many books the author mentioned, and watch all the TV and film adaptations he talked about, and learn more about many of the people. The characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson are obsessively fascinating, and so is the story of the author, Arthur Conan Doyle, and his family, friends, and descendants. You might think this ground has been covered, but not in the sort of fascinating, novelistic form this author has adopted. Clearly, thousands of hours of research were involved, and still Bostrom has created a page turner and an addictive story. I was sad to see it end as it got even better as it went on. Special kudos to the author for making it clear how he felt about certain less savory characters and especially for presenting a factual, clear, and detailed description of the integration of women into the Baker Street Irregulars and a nonjudgmental description of the growth of fan fiction and fans who see the Holmes/Watson relationship in romantic and/or sexual terms. This book is highly recommended for anybody who likes Sherlock Holmes or, really, any 19th/20th century detective literature.

Well translated from the original Swedish, I found the book very interesting during the years Arthur Conan Doyle was alive. Not so much the estate's and family's machinations to keep Sherlock Holmes reputation and profits up. I also found the backgrounds for the various Theater/TV/Movie versions interesting.

Wonderful addition to every Sherlockian's bookcase - even those with just a passing interest in Sherlock Holmes will learn a great deal about the character, the author, and all who have brought Holmes "to life" over the years in pastiches, on stage and on film/TV.

Comprehensive, well-written, and a joy to read. It is the history of Doyle, Holmes, the Baker street Irregulars, movie and TV adaptations and so much more. Highly recommended.

Wonderful to learn all the stories behind the stories that inspired and were inspired by Sir Arthur’s familiar canon. Bravo!

The story behind the author and the detective. A fascinating and apparently complete account covering well over a century of Holmesiana. I thought it got a bit boring in accounting the events after Doyle's offspring all died - in other words, the last 20-30 years.

So you’ve read all the Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. You’ve enjoyed the vintage art of Sidney Paget and Frederic Dorr Steele that helped shape the image of Sherlock Holmes. You’ve watched Basil Rathbone in 14 films and maybe heard some of the radio plays written and produced by Edith Meiser. You’ve watched all the television episodes featuring Ronald Howard, Douglas Wilmer, Peter Cushing, Jeremy Brett, Benedict Cumberbatch or Jonny Lee Miller. You were astounded when the long thought lost 1916 film ‘Sherlock Holmes’ with William Gillette was rediscovered and released to DVD a couple years ago. You may have read biographies of Arthur Conan Doyle, touching on his inspiration for Holmes via Joseph Bell, or his investigation of real life crimes, or guides to the actors who have played Holmes, or perhaps some of the beautifully illustrated surveys detailing art and artifacts associated with Sherlock Holmes. You may have heard about the Baker Street Irregulars and the role of Vincent Starrett, Christopher Morley and others in their establishment, read their publication The Baker Street Journal, the involvement of Presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, or know something about the squabbles between Doyle’s heirs and the BSI, or that the BSI didn’t allow women members until 1991. You may be a member of a local Sherlock Holmes scion society or book club. You’ve probably read any number of published pastiches including Ellery Queen’s The Misadventures of Sherlock Holmes or Nick Meyer’s game changing The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, Mitch Cullin’s A Slight Trick of the Mind, or more recent anthologies by Laurie King and Les Klinger, the last of which resulted in a huge public court case firmly putting the character (if not all the stories) of Sherlock Holmes in the public domain. You may have listened to podcasts by the Baker Street Babes celebrating the remarkable international success of the BBC’s Sherlock, or attended one of the conventions, all of which have contributed to a global popularity, shift and resurgence in one of the oldest fandoms ever encountered. Hell, you are probably even familiar with the ubiquitous tent joke. Or maybe you’ve not read or seen any of it and just have some vague curiosity about Sherlock Holmes? In any event, what you’re probably wondering is how can I see the ‘big picture’? How does it all fit together? How does a simple detective character, created in 1887, manage to stay in the public eye and be a pop culture sensation, taking the world by storm, some 130 years later?Mattias Boström’s unique, incredibly ambitious and wide ranging volume ‘From Holmes to Sherlock: The Story of the Men and Women Who Created an Icon’ aims to answer that question. This isn’t a straight-up history, nor is it a biography of any one individual, instead it is an examination of the entire Sherlock Holmes phenomenon; tracing the steps from inception in the mind of Arthur Conan Doyle right through to the people and events that shaped the latest film and television extravaganzas, all presented in a chronological narrative form. The book is exactly what it claims to be in the subtitle, it is literally ‘The Story of the Men and Women Who Created an Icon.’ By utilizing the narrative story form, rather than a dry historical format, Boström makes the reader part of the events as they unfold and gives us a better sense of the key players as what they are, or were; real live human beings with all the foibles, quirks and flaws that implies. While it reads like a work of fiction, almost a literary mystery, it is a rich tapestry, filled with real-world heroes and villains, and Boström, using a wealth of facts as foundation (Boström and Matt Laffey have been exhaustively researching newspaper archives for mentions of Holmes and Conan Doyle for a series of books, currently up to three volumes, called ‘Sherlock Holmes and Conan Doyle in the Newspapers’, published by Wessex Press), extrapolates and provides us with scenes that make us privy to the thoughts and motivations behind their actions. The chatty, almost gossipy style, is engaging, almost deceptively masking the wealth of information the reader is being handed, but never loses the thread of the story at its heart. While you will meet an almost bewildering array of people and cover 130 years worth of events, vignettes, tales of greed and heartbreak, Boström puts it all together in a cohesive form that is never less than compelling and will have you turning pages at the pace of a Dan Brown thriller. Whether you’re familiar with the elements of the history of Sherlock Holmes in print and media, or a complete newcomer, I guarantee you’ll learn something new in this monumental work that explores the ‘big picture’ of the Sherlock Holmes phenomenon and how it came to be.Bottom line: I cannot recommend this highly enough, as ‘From Holmes to Sherlock: The Story of the Men and Women Who Created an Icon’ is likely the most important work connected to Sherlock Holmes to be published in 2017 and a must-read for anyone with an interest in the character, the history or the fandom surrounding him.Note: Review based on an uncorrected proof provided on January 7, 2017. As such no remarks regarding typos (there aren't many) or irregularities in style (this work has been translated from Swedish) have been noted in this review as they may be corrected before publication.

Amazon.com Review

A Victorian boarding school story, a Gothic mansion mystery, a gossipy romp about a clique of girlfriends, and a dark other-worldly fantasy--jumble them all together and you have this complicated and unusual first novel. Gemma, 16, has had an unconventional upbringing in India, until the day she foresees her mother’s death in a black, swirling vision that turns out to be true. Sent back to England, she is enrolled at Spence, a girls’ academy with a mysterious burned-out East Wing. There Gemma is snubbed by powerful Felicity, beautiful Pippa, and even her own dumpy roommate Ann, until she blackmails herself and Ann into the treacherous clique. Gemma is distressed to find that she has been followed from India by Kartik, a beautiful young man who warns her to fight off the visions. Nevertheless, they continue, and one night she is led by a child-spirit to find a diary that reveals the secrets of a mystical Order. The clique soon finds a way to accompany Gemma to the other-world realms of her visions "for a bit of fun" and to taste the power they will never have as Victorian wives, but they discover that the delights of the realms are overwhelmed by a menace they cannot control. Gemma is left wi! th the knowledge that her role as the link between worlds leaves her with a mission to seek out the "others" and rebuild the Order. A Great and Terrible Beauty is an impressive first book in what should prove to be a fascinating trilogy. (Ages 12 up) –Patty Campbell

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up An interesting combination of fantasy, light horror, and historical fiction, with a dash of romance thrown in for good measure. On her 16th birthday, Gemma Doyle fights with her mother. She wants to leave India where her family is living, runs off when her mother refuses to send her to London to school, has a dreadful vision and witnesses her mother's death. Two months later, Gemma is enrolled in London's Spence School, still troubled by visions, and unable to share her grief and guilt over her loss. She gradually learns to control her vision and enter the "realms" where magical powers can make anything happen and where her mother waits to instruct her. Gradually she and her new friends learn about the Order, an ancient group of women who maintained the realms and regulated their power, and how two students unleashed an evil creature from the realms by killing a Gypsy girl. Gemma uncovers her mother's connection to those events and learns what she now must do. The fantasy element is obvious, and the boarding-school setting gives a glimpse into a time when girls were taught gentility and the importance of appearances. The author also makes a point about the position of women in Victorian society. Bray's characters are types--Felicity, clever and powerful; Ann, plain and timid; Pippa, beautiful and occasionally thoughtless; Gemma, spirited and chafing under society's rules--but not offensively so, and they do change as the story progresses. The ending leaves open the likelihood of a sequel. Recommend this to fantasy fans who also like Sherlock Holmes or Mary Russell.--Lisa Prolman, Greenfield Public Library, MA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. First of all, the book isn’t nearly as girly as the cover implies. I thought for sure my manhood would diminish when my wife told me this was the next book I was going to read. But, it turns out it wasn’t all that bad. In fact, it was pretty good.A Great and Terrible Beauty is one part Harry Potter, one part The CW, and one part Pride and Prejudice. Only darker. Much darker. It starts to border on the edge of material that makes certain mothers reading their daughter’s books stop and freak out. It’s not filled with “nice” magic like Harry Potter or Game of Thrones (ha!), but that “I summon, thee!” kinda magic that made the Puritans get all crazy. At first, I didn’t love the book because I found the girls to be too bitchy, too backstabbing, too 2003. Not to say that Mean Girls didn’t exist back then, but really, we’re gonna go to a cave and drink whisky from a bottle like a group of drunken sorority girls? The plot and the characters finally got going, though, when they all moved beyond hating each other (as much as that’s possible for these girls) and actually started doing something.Man, it sure seems like I shouldn’t have liked this book, but I did. The plot moved along well and wasn’t as predictable as some seemed to think. What can I say? I enjoyed it. I might even keep the next two books in the series around just to pull out to show my wife I’m reading them when she starts to get crabby at me. It might work.

I adore this book. "I’m running because I can, because I must. Because I want to see how far I can go before I have to stop."So anyway, this book was one of my favorites in middle school- it had everything I liked: historical fiction with a dash of the paranormal. However, Libba Bray's A Great and Terrible Beauty is so much more than that. It's a staunchly feminist YA novel that should have more recognition among young girls everywhere. And here's why:Gemma: Gemma is, without a doubt, a beautifully written main character. Though she may be a "chosen one", the girl is definitely NO Mary Sue! She can be annoying, pushy, and quite mean at times- as well as very judgmental and ignorant,, but she is a sixteen year old girl. And sixteen year olds, especially ones that have been privileged their whole lives, are know-it-alls. And Libba Bray writes her very well. I grew to love Gemma! She get's her ass handed to her- and I enjoyed watching her grow into a better friend/person.Friendships: This is a book that celebrates female friendship vs. young girls clamoring for the love of some aloof boy. There is this trend in YA where the main character is hounded by other girls and is left to only only associate with some handsome male (throneofglasscougchcough) and it is so great to read a story about friendship and sisterhood. Also, this book is no love story! However, Gemma still finds herself "in like" with a character named Kartik. I found this pollen to be written very well- there is no "insta-love", because in real life, especially at Gemma's age, "insta-love" is more "insta-i wanna kiss you" and it was interesting to see Gemma wrestle with her feelings and be confused. It was realistic! And I liked how he didn't crumble for her! Libya Bray let's them be their own characters.Themes : There are so many wonderful themes in this book! Feminism? Racism? Classism? Xenophobia? All of that is discussed and weaved in brilliantly. I would go into details, but there would be spoilers. This book impacted me so much that I bought a tons of copies and campaigned to have it integrated into my high-school's English curriculum. Of course, it helped that my high-school was an all girls school, ex-finishing school much like Spence.Thank you Libba Bray! Thank you! There are many criticisms about the novel. 1. That the writing is verbose. Well, I will admit that Bray's style is quite heavy, but ti works here- it is seems that a lack of brevity fits into the victorian setting. 2. That the POC are made fun and are regarded inappropriately. I understand that- but Gemma isn't going to automatically not be prejudiced or ignorant. Gemma is kind of a bitch. But she grows throughout the novel and the book- and begins to view those different from her differently. I appreciated the fact that Bray didn't go easy on Gemma.

An intriguing story. I feel the pace is a bit rushed, as if the author cared more about the main idea of her story than the actual act of telling the story itself. This also comes across to me in the lack of details, lots of opportunity for descriptions of places and characters is left out as the story skips forward to the next point it wants to make. Things seem to happen one after another just to allow the story to move where the author wants it to. The characters are not very believable either, seemingly bi polar from one moment to the next, or acting very out of character. Although not much character building is present so perhaps they are acting according to their character, the reader just isn't given enough to know the characters that well

It's a good book that describes the struggles of the Mayan population in Guatemala. It is best to read in conjunction with different articles that criticize this book and also the foreword. This was not written by Rigoberta and it is important to consider the politics of translation as well as transcription. She gave her testimony to Elizabeth Burgos, who collected the information from the interview in Spanish and created the text. At the time when Rigoberta gave her testimony, she only had been speaking Spanish for three years.I read this for one of my college classes at Princeton and I just discussed this book at my book club.Another thing to consider is the genre that this book falls in. It is not a memoir or an autobiography. It falls under the category of latin american literature known as tesimonio. This differs from the direct translation of testimony. I recommend readers do some research on the politics of testimonio and whether or not all that is said is needed to be true.It is a great book to start a conversation on the politics of ethnicity and whether books like these are needed to be entirely truthful or factual!

I’ve been non-stop reading this book about the remarkable yet humble indigenous woman, who emerged out of oppressive poverty and ethnic discrimination by educating and empowering herself, and eventually won the Nobel Peace Prize. It is hard to put the book down once you have opened it. It makes you aware and makes you cringe at the hardships, injustices and the layers of oppression against the hardworking and less educated poor, not only in Guatemala but also elsewhere in the world. I highly recommend this book, especially for those of us who want to learn about poverty from the “worm’s eye view” (i.e., first-person narratives, in addition to from the “bird’s eye view” of statistical analyses — both are very important).

Menchu gives vivid descriptions of her tribe Quiche and the struggles in Guatemala. It does not provide statistics, maps, graphs and actual pictures of her tribe. There is not much of a historical significance on the aspect of knowing how many tribes are in an existence till this day or about the civil war that broke out in the 1960s. However, I gave it a 5 star because of the significance of the propaganda it gave to the world audience. To let the world know that indigenous tribes are still people and they have struggled against the military, government, and damaged environment. Gives details of racism, classism, and other oppressions that many indigenous people had to deal with. It was an easy read and a page turner.

This is a powerful an extremely interesting text about an indigenous woman from Guatemala. It documents her early life, the culture of her community, the intense hardships they endured and the political repressions which eventually brought them to wage a political struggle that utilized both violent and nonviolent resistance.Though written in memoir form, it is actually compiled from a series of intensive interviews conducted by Elizabeth Burgos-Debray over a one week period in 1982. As a tour of Quiche Maya culture it's of serious anthropological interest (Menchu describes some of the ceremonies and rituals of her people, as well as the hardships of daily life). As a description of political conflict and poverty, it's a sobering reflection-- the amount of pain Menchu and her people endure is beyond belief. Torture, forced disappearances, military raids, unjust eviction and racism become common occurrences. While some have dismissed the work due to certain inconsistencies present in Menchu's testimony revealed by anthropologist David Stoll, it's clear that these are relatively minor (for example, Menchu's brother was indeed tortured and murdered by the military, but it turns out she didn't witness it directly as she recounts in the book).I give it 5 stars for being a readable, truthful account of an important and difficult life. It would be a more accurate read if Burgos-Debray had left it in question-answer interview format, but it would also be less readable. Check it out, you'll learn a lot!

The narrative is choppy but the story is powerful. It needs to be heard. The struggles of the poor have been undercut by false accusations that they are simply communists. No, they are hard working, desperate people who have been exploited for long decades to the benefit of the few. Their cause is just. Rigoberta Menchu helps tell their story.

The book was excellent. I travel and stay in Guatemala every year for about a month. I have a sister who also lives on the Rio Dulce. The book gave me a real insight into the lives of the Mayan people who I find to be very peaceful, gentle people. I am saddened by the hardship they have had to endure. A must read for those who visit the country.

I received a different version than the one pictured, but still received the correct book. The book was in good condition and came quickly in the mail. The book itself is a testimonio from a Guatemalan Native and is not for the faint of heart. It is a book that does not hold back detail of torture and pain and has many moments that will make your stomach turn. I would not recommend it for all audiences. This is a powerful, moving recounting of the events that happened to Rigoberta Menchu and the other natives in Guatemala during the late 20th century.

Review

The Hubble Space Telescope has been photographing planets, stars, galaxies, and nebulae since 1990. This accessible, visual science reference for students and general readers gathers about 300 recent images from the Hubble telescope, many full-page size. The book uncovers the telescope's technical workings, revealing how the images are created and interpreted, and explains how the images support scientists' theories and predictions, even as some images have taken scientists by surprise. The book's color photos, images, and illustrations will appeal to readers of all ages. (ProtoView 2015-03-19)[review for 11 X 11 edition] This catalogue of discoveries made thanks to the Hubble telescope works just as well as an otherworldly art book. (David Fuller Winnipeg Free Press 2012-12-01)[review for 11 X 11 edition] Superbly well-produced. Any engagement with this "cosmic portfolio," from picture gazing to deep reading, is grandly rewarded. (Donna Seaman Booklist 2012-12-01)[review for 11 X 11 edition] At first glance, some readers might consider this a coffee table book with just a bunch of pretty pictures--the color images are very high quality--but the substantial captions for the images are extremely well written. Though readers can find many of the images online, they will not get the same lucid descriptions of the science behind the research of each astronomical object... This book will be useful as a supplementary resource for students in introductory astronomy courses. Hopefully, it will motivate more students to learn about the amazing universe that they live in. Highly recommended. (R. Kraus, University of Denver Choice 2013-06-01)[review for 11 X 11 edition] There's a new Hubble picture book every year, but this year we're lucky to have one authored by the guy who wrote NightWatch and The Universe and Beyond. (Alan Boyle Cosmic Log on NBC News.com 2012-12-19)[review for 11 X 11 edition] Stunningly colourful and surreal photos of cosmic columns, spiral galaxies, nebulas and pulsating stars...accompanied by clear, accessible explanatory text. (Globe and Mail, Christmas 2012 Gift Book List 2012-12-08)[review for 11 X 11 edition] You won't find a better celestial tour guide than Dickinson. Pick up Hubble's Universe and enjoy the ride. (John McPhee Halifax Chronicle Herald 2012-12-09)[review for 11 X 11 edition] {starred review) Dickinson details the Hubble Space Telescope's contributions to science in both text and images. The book's precise descriptions and captions brilliantly complement the nearly 300 full-color Hubble images that form the bulk of the work. Its ten chapters showcase a selection of Hubble's most significant images with explanations of the discoveries they helped make. Especially fantastic are the images of solar wind stripping away large gas clouds that harbor stellar nurseries; images of Hubble's deep field, revealing galaxy clusters from halfway across the universe; and sublime images of vast, colorful nebulas.... Dickinson explains how all the photographed objects fit into scientists' understanding of cosmology, adding extra context to the pictures. Even if you only look at the pictures, this is an amazing book. The accompanying text and photo captions make the work outstanding. (Jeffrey Beall, University of Colorado Denver Libra Library Journal 2013-01-01)[review for 11 X 11 edition] Dickinson showcases extraordinary late-breaking pictures, many of which have yet to receive wide distribution...and presents a breathtaking portfolio drawn from an archive of over 500,000 existing Hubble images. The accompanying text balances accuracy with accessibility, Dickinson's hallmark. And thanks to the author's familiarity with Hubble's history and discoveries and his access to top Hubble scientists for insight and accuracy, the text includes facts and tidbits not found in any other book. Combined with hundreds of brilliant images, the clear narrative brings to life the fascinating forces at work in the universe. (Lunar and Planetary Information Bulletin 2012-11-01)[review for 11 X 11 edition] Part gorgeous coffee-table book, [part] mesmerizing astronomy book, Dickinson's latest is a treasure map to the majesty of our universe. (Publisher's Weekly 2012-09-17)

I bought a book at Amazon a couple of years ago called "Far Out" by Michael Benson and it has some truly amazing images in it. I thought maybe this will be as good as it gets for consumer Astronomy picture books. It has now been surpassed. Just recently I bought "Hubble's Universe" by Terence Dickinson and am now finished the book. Every time you turn a page is WOW!!!! moment in your life. The images in this book are just stunning. Terence writes in a non-technical very reader friendly style and I've a couple of his books from the past but this thing has got to be the greatest astronomy picture book to be found. We see a lot of bad things in the news media about some people but this book is representative of some of mankind's highest achievements. The ability to create a technology in order to "see" objects that are hundreds of thousands of light years across and hundreds of millions of light years distant in such stunning detail is truly a unique human trait. Reading through this book is very humbling in that we humans are contemplating the unbelievably vast oceans of space, time and matter and we are insignificant bits of dust on Earth with extremely limited time spans. But we can also feel a sense of pride in our teams of scientists and engineers... and the every day tax-payers supporting them, who have enabled such a wonderful view of the cosmos. It would be a waste of time and money to buy a Kindle version of this book as the colourful images is what this book is about. You need the physical book for this one. Truly wonderful !!!! (Absolutely awesome !!! for residents of the USA)

Ordered this book as a gift, not realizing that it was the Compact Edition, which is a full inch smaller in width and length, so not quite as impressive as the 11x11 version. The title didn't indicate that it was a different size and I didn't notice it in the small print since I was ordering from my phone. I was able to exchange it, but it would be helpful if the title clearly stated Compact Edition to avoid confusion. Also disappointed that neither version has a dust jacket.

My fiancé loves anything that has to do with space, and he already has a wide collection of books and DVD’s and such so I was a little gotta nervous about ordering this as he might already have it. Turns out he didn’t and he was amazed by this. I think this is a perfect gift for anyone with curiousity about space. The photos are beautiful and the book itself is big and has a lot of pictures. You can’t beat the price point either. Overall satisfied with this purchase.

This book is absolutely beautiful! There are pictures in it I've not seen when searching Nasa's website and many are full page shots at roughly 11x11. I am using this as a coffee table book, not only for the pictures, but the information inside. Very please with this purchase!

I've looked at Hubble photos before, somtimes on TV, via the internet, and occasionly in print. I always enjoy seeing and learning about them. This book, however, takes the whole experience to a new level. As I learned about the technology required to obtain the basic information and then the artistry required to produce the enhanced photos, I could better appreciate the true miracle of the photos. I appreciate the dedication of all the people required to put the book in my hand.Whether you are an expert in the field or the parent of a child just showing an interest in the sky, I highly recommend this book.

Great descriptions of some of the most incredible space images. Not the kind of book you read once and put away, it’s a conversation starter & something you’ll want to read multiple times. Highly recommended!

Wonderful wonderful wonderful book! This book has been on my wish list far too long and then I finally decided to treat myself for my birthday and bought this book. It is worth every cent!Beautifully put together, easy to read and understand without being simple, and the photos are glorious!I can't say enough good things about this book. It puts the majesty and the mystery and the awe of the universe right into your own hands.

Got this for my husband for father's day! He loved it....gave it to him early and he has been reading it constantly....I sure made the right choice. The book is brilliantly illustrated and clearly written and explained. It is more than a "coffee table" book - it is a permanent resource book for young and old alike! Definitely for anyone who love the vastness of the universe and the wonders of space. A must see book! You will never forget the magnificent images that Hubble has captured!

Tao, the little mischief-maker, was fast asleep when Ray came dashing into the room. Zzzzzz! There was seriously no time for little lazy samurai warriors because it was a special day. "The bus is waiting," Ray shouted, "We leave in ten!" They were going to head to the International Martial Arts Championship. Grandmaster Snow was anxious to get going because this was going to be the best championship ever! The bus was soon heading through the hills, but evil was lurking about. When they arrived at the hotel, they were no sooner settled when Master Snow made a horrible discovery. Someone had kidnapped Hiro and Jay, their champions! There was no way they could win without them so something had to be done. The police were on the job, but was there anyone else who could help solve the mystery?"The Red Robe must be behind it," declared Tao. "He's always hated Snow. We should investigate!" Tao, Ray, Lee, and Kat were quickly off to check out the scene of the crime. Click, click, click! Lee took pictures as everyone scrambled around. Ah, ha! There were clues, but not only were there missing champions, but also the rare blue scarab katana, a scarab with some serious powers. Would Tao and gang be able to solve the championship mystery and save the games? This super-secret samurai mystery with Tao and his friends is one that will garner many new fans. This is the first full-length graphic novel I've read with loveable Tao as the main character. This mystery will appeal to even the most reluctant reader as Tao wends his way to the heart of the reader and tries to solve the crime. The full-color action-packed panels are fun and very appealing.
