First of all, this is a good book. A very good book. I read it three times in a row to let its wisdom sink in. It gives an excellent reorientation toward a God-dependent commitment to the souls of our children, the reason that most of us are homeschooling in the first place. And it's not just philosophical; it's also practical. Sarah Mackenzie gives good suggestions for pursuing a restful home education setting, rather than a frenzied, academic-success driven one. But, I found myself wondering, how will this model look in the high school years? The author herself hasn't yet plunged into the waters of homeschooling high schoolers, waters that often feel very icy with uncertain post-secondary plans, SATs, dual credit options, and college applications circling us like sharks! She encourages parents not to worry if we don't finish the math book this year as long as we've focused on the deeper things of goodness, truth, and beauty, and I love her advice. For those of us with teenagers, however, who will soon need to enter or reenter the world of textbooks, standardized evaluations, and transcripts, our kids just need to finish the math book this year or they can't move on to the next level of math. Whether they see the beauty in Algebra 2 or are inspired by it is very easily shuffled off to the side in the necessity of passing the CLEP test so we can get a jump on college credits and possibly afford a college education. I'd love to see a Teaching High School from Rest after the author has the homeschooling of a few teens under her belt!

Each of my three years of homeschooling (so far) I have reached February-March and began to question everything I'm doing. Maybe I need a new curriculum. Maybe I need to commit to a new method. Maybe I need to overhaul our daily routine and really buckle down. Do I even know what I'm doing? Am I doing any of this right? Maybe I should have left this up to the experts. Thankfully this year a fellow HS mom recommended this book to me and it was exactly what I needed to read. My anxiety has settled immensely in the past 24 hours since I picked it up. I felt like I highlighted 3/4 of the book because so much of it spoke right to me and the struggles I've been having. If you've ever found yourself overwhelmed by whether or not use homeschooling "good enough," I highly recommend this book to help you step back, take some deep breaths and calm your anxious mind and heart. It's well-written, quick to read, and full of truth and excellent advice. I'll probably read it many more times throughout my homeschooling journey!

Can I give this 6 stars? Because I would in a heartbeat. This book reassured my heart and brought rest to my mind. It addressed every doubt I had and even ones I didn't know I had! It should truly be required reading for any homeschooling mom. I read it every August, but I find myself revisiting the book throughout the school year for reassurance. The idea of teaching from a restful state changes how I homeschool and even how I parent. I wish there were a Parenting from Rest version of this book because the principle can benefit anyone who has children, not just homeschooling moms. Love it!

Written in a clear, encouraging way, the author relates how she has modified her homeschool teaching style to a lifestyle that honors God, her abilities and responsibilities, and creates less tension and stress at home. I stumbled upon this book while searching Amazon for encouragement to continue my homeschooling journey. I had cast a broad net searching for anything homeschool related that might be that life ring I could grap hold of, and be pulled from the depths of the murky, churning, discouraging world I was in. I have a high-schooler that does his work well, without complaint, mostly independently. I have an elementary student who does her work well, loves a challenge and also works well, mostly without complaint. Then I have my middle-schooler. This one, whom I dearly love, is the reason I purchased this book. Our days with one another were far from restful. The days were cyclical. They started with positive encouragement to do his work that turned into nagging and threatening to do it or else. After reading this book I realized that for this child I was asking too much. Every child is different, I know. But this book gave me permission to "lighten the load" for my beloved son without compromising his education. In fact, lightening his load actually HELPED him to do his work so much for efficiently and with excellence. I was able to guide him in the assigned work without damaging his spirit, (which is something that took a beating almost every day) and it allowed him to see that he CAN do his work - well, and within a timely manner. He has finally seen in himself what I have been trying to show him - that he is capable!!I love the many other ideas that Sarah talks about in this book, but for the the chapter on lightening the load was life saving. I found this book towards the first part of our homeschooling year. It was so freeing to live out the remainder of our year in peace. I've since found Sarah's website, Amongst Lovely Things, and her Read-Aloud Revival membership site. I don't usually jump on bandwagons, but I'm happy to hop aboard this one.

This is a nice book. However, the ingredient list is extensive. I'd like much better to see ingredients that most people have on hand, or can easily get. Sapindus mukorossi berries,mango seed butter, fossilized amber essential oil? Really? No offense to Sandra.

The book I received is missing a section. It appears to be a new book, and the parts that are there are informative, but pages 115 through 127 are missing! They are not torn out, they are just missing. It's like the book was bound and put together without that section. I contacted the seller, who continues to advertise the book as "new" and in "perfect condition" and asked them to check their stock to see if they had a book that included all the pages, but they refused and blew me off, so now I'm not sure what to do. I think I will try to purchase another copy from a different book seller and hope for better results. Other than the missing pages, the book is just what I was looking for. The recipes are easy to follow and the resulting salve seems to have the pain relieving qualities I was looking for. I look forward to trying more of the recipes.

My order was fulfilled in a satisfactory manner and the info in the book is good if you have knowledge of making beauty products at home already. I would recommend ordering Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health as a companion book as well as The Official High Times Cannabis Cookbook.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!! It has helped me develop and learn about the topical applications I am interested in creating and more about herbs that pair well with cannabis. This book is like the Joy of Cooking in that one recipe builds on another and you can cross reference different recipes to make something that suits exactly what you want. I have much more to learn and am looking forward to it.

Very good book, well organized and very practical. Gives a good overview of some very useful pain-relief and soothing methods of using cannabis in ways other than smoking. Only a few edible recipes, so if that is your thing, I would suggest a different book. Gave as a gift, as I do not use cannabis myself, but my friend was very happy with the pictures and content.

I am an Adult learner just starting, and after buying this book at my instructors advice, I am a Twinkle Twinkle little star MASTER!!! I can play it all kinds of ways man, just trust me, it is so freaking awesome! You can keep your Mozart and Beethoven, give me some more of that Twinkle Twinkle stuff! Buy this book, and you'll see what I'm talking about. But for real, this is a very awesome book, but just know you will definitely want an instructor, it's not self explanatory, and you'll need someone to give you the tabs and show you techniques. Absolutely get the version with the audio cd, I can't imagine trying to practice at home without it. Great buy.

My 7 year old just started violin lessons for the first time. Her lessons are from a Suzuki teacher, who recommended this book to assist with practicing at home (since there's only one 30-minute lesson per week). The book starts by introducing learners to the parts of the violin and eventually ends with some good, beginner songs. Her teacher said that students can take anywhere from 1-3 years to work through this book, depending on various factors. For $15, it's an excellent supplement to what the teacher offers!I also appreciate the CD that comes with the book. The teacher mentioned how the Suzuki method is big on training the ear. Violin students need to be able to hear themselves and know if they are playing correctly. That can only come by listening to the songs as they are being played correctly. We listen to this CD many evenings during dinner. It makes for nice background music during dinner time, and my daughter is also learning what the songs are supposed to sound like, which is helping to "train" her ear. I thought it was a bit weird at first to realize there is also a piano playing with the violin in the CD. However, I quickly realized that musicians seldom have solos. They need to know how to play with others, so the piano is helping to train her ear as well.

I wish I had noticed this book had four languages! It is like reading instructions to put a desk together. You have to find your language. I did not notice that this was the case.It is a good source for some songs to practice with, but you really need another lesson book and/or insteuctor to be able to use any Suzuki method book. I am not a fan of Suzuki, but I have the cello book because my cello instructor uses Suzuki, so that is what I bought. Songs in the cello book are repeated in the violin book. That makes me familiar with the melodies, allowing me to play with my violin while I wait for my future instructor to be able to start new students again. This instructor will use Suzuki (frowny face), so I will already have the book, unfortunately in four languages!

I grew up learning the Suzuki method for piano, so when I bought a violin I knew I wanted to use the Suzuki method as well. These updated books (well, updated from the '80s) have so much information and theory in the beginning of the book which, as an adult, is really helpful for me to learn before diving into playing the instrument. I'd highly recommend this method to anyone looking to learn the violin (or piano).

Bought this book as a requiement by the teacher my daughter was taking private lessons from. 1 lesson later she didn't jive with the teacher. Money well spent. The cover is shiny though and the pages are crisp. I assume in our house it will maintain this look for years.

This works really well for my kids. Their violin teacher wanted us to get the one with a cd of the music. Thats so helpful. Not only are they learning to read the music, the cd with it helps them play by ear. Really great method for helping kids learn violin. I recommend it. My kids are starting to play so well. There are also many people on YouTube that teach these songs in a learning Tempo. They have helped my kids out immensely as well as their teacher. Hope this helps!

The teacher I contacted encouraged me to play the CD and expose my daughter to the music as often as possible prior to the start of her lessons. I was concerned the music might be grating and/or dull but it is surprisingly quite relaxing. So go ahead and get an early start.

I had to purchase this as a requirement from my daughters violin teacher. Our copy did NOT come with the accompanying CD like it was supposed to so I had to purchase that separately & that was frustrating so that's why I'm taking a star off. The book itself is fine, it is what she needed for her lessons.

Bouguereau, without doubt, produced beautiful paintings. He followed the classic salon style, with romantic figures in pastoral scenes. Since his career overlapped the blossoming of Art Nouveau, one can certainly read some effect of that era in his work, whether he in fact put it there.Although he was widely acclaimed in his time, there have been mixed impressions of it, both then and now. The Impressionists held him up as all that was wrong with the French art institutions of the time - criticism he seems to have brushed off without a thought. Then, his tendency toward scantily-clad figures in languorous poses brings to mind Alma Tadema, who pushed those stylistic elements about as far as they could go. I can't help note that, in his time, his rustic figures were meant to evoke the elegance of an older, purer time, whether or not that time had in fact existed. This could also be understood as a romantic white-washing of the grueling life of farmworkers to ease upper-class consciences - the real-life subjects would never see his paintings and his clients would never meet the subjects in real life, so who could complain?But great art always admits of multiple readings, and a century's difference can affect perceptions profoundly. These paintings are truly great, and this book is one to come back to again and again.-- wiredweird

This is a great book with pretty good information on the painter himself, and good quality, often full-page reproductions of select works of the Master. Itâ€™s a great buy for those of us who canâ€™t yet afford the Bartoli/Ross work on Bouguereau.

I've been a fan of Bouguereau since I first saw The Young Shepardess at the San Diego Museum of Art many years ago. That painting is included here as well as another favorite, The Broken Pitcher. The reproductions are descent and there are many of them. The only fault I can find is that it doesn't include enough nudes. Bouguereau was a fine painter of female nude and though some are included here I would have liked more. The book does include Evening Mood, The Birth of Venus, The Nymphaeum and a few others. So far I haven't gotten around to reading the text.

A good read for information on an artist maybe not so well known he is not fashionable but still a good book to have on an artist who should not be classed as a chocolate box painter.

I bought this book because I had read that it contained information about the artist that is just not available in other books. But I am very familiar with the scope of this artist's works, and was very disappointed to find so much of it not included in the illustrations. But again--I wanted the information about Adolphe-William Bouguereau's life -- to better understand the person behind the paint.

So much information is given here about this famous artist who painted over 700 fantastic works. His life is told well and the colors of his varied paintings are remarkable for a paperback book. Definitely worth the purchase price!

This is a very informative reference book. Extremely unhappy with this purchase. I'm not complaining about the content at all. It's the missing content that is frustrating. There are so many missing words and sentences in the Kindle version that it is almost impossible to read. I have been reduced to skimming through this book because of this. The only saving quality of this purchase are the links. I DO NOT recommend the kindle version unless you are okay with purchasing the links included.And I only bought the Kindle version because I believe that it is atrocious to charge $40 for a book that has less than 90 pages.I implore Dane Callaway to not think like those who recklessly charge high prices for things that would contribute to the liberation of people. I understand that we all need to make a living, but let this be a testimony that we live in a world of exploitation at the expense of those who don't have the fiat.If we want to change the world we have to change the way we think.

I've been using this planting calendar for years. The methods used are well researched, and I can see the difference in germination and plant strength when planting on the recommended days vs, the not recommended days. The personal side benefit is that it provides deadlines and that motivates me to get the seeds and plants into the ground or else miss the proper window of time.

Love this garden calendar! I've been using these calendars to plan my garden for 4 years now and see such a difference in the quality of my crops. I read the first edition of this book years ago as part of my work with educationally-disadvantaged students. What struck me was how economic status shapes our perceptions and expectations, and how that can really influence choices and actions. I realized, as an upper-middle-class teacher, it had never occurred to me that to understand my students I needed to better understand their world. Later, as a high school administrator working with very bright, college-bound, low-income students, I made it a priority to help them understand the "hidden rules" of the middle class, so they would not be caught off-guard. Too many bright kids are unsuccessful in higher education, not because they can't do the academic, but because they don't understand the cultural norms and expectations. This ground-breaking book helps to categorize and organize the differences between life in generational poverty, the middle class, and wealth. (Also very pertinent information for any supervisor, outside of schools.)

This book is so valuable. I first read it as a school teacher and it opened my eyes to common problems faced by children in poverty. It helped me understand and better meet their needs.Next I took on a professorship in China and parts of the book became a part of what I assigned my students to read as we discussed the financial world.Now I am in Vanautu on an LDS Charities mission assigned to do humanitarian work. In this third world country it has been interesting to learn that the principles of poverty are found even in a third world country and may be a part of what holds the people back from moving forward. Principles of poverty are pervasive. The book helps me understand better and be more patient with the people I work with.This is a must read for many.

I bought this book after a recommendation from a teacher friend and found it invaluable. I was volunteering as a Guardian ad Litem (which I highly recommend) and dealing with children and families in poverty. It was a great help in understanding their view point and outlook on life which was so different than ours. Then our niece & nephew (14 y/o & 16 y/o) came to live with us after their mother died of a drug overdose. They had lived in poverty without a stable home all their life. It was shocking to us some of the basic ideas, outlooks, rules of life that we took for granted that they were totally unaware of. In so many ways they had a different view of life, right and wrong and had many "wierd" holes in their knowledge. i.e. At Thanksgiving when my niece was about 17 we served ham and she asked where ham came from-is that a bird? She is very intelligent & had made it to high school with good grades. I don't think her family had ever sat down and had a traditional holiday dinner. Back to review - this is a great book that helped us out immensely.Quote from "Goodreads" - I couldn't say it better: People in poverty face challenges virtually unknown to those in middle class or wealth--challenges from both obvious and hidden sources. The reality of being poor brings out a survival mentality, and turns attention away from opportunities taken for granted by everyone else. Whether you're an educator--or a social, health, or legal services professional (or just an interested family member or volunteer) -this book gives you practical, real-world support and guidance to improve your effectiveness in working with people from all socioeconomic backgrounds.

The poor, middle, and rich classes are illustrations of the American cast system; or should I say class system? Ruby K. Payne brilliantly illustrates the differences between the three classes with how they view money, networking, and work. If you work with the public in any capacity, this is a must-read.

In this book, Ruby Payne successfully argues that poverty is not just a material situation but an entire subculture. People who know no other way of life do not adapt well to middle class norms, which in many parts of society, especially education, are normative. She presents a fascinating and challenging way to look at families and students in poverty, why they behave the way they do in school and often don't succeed, and what works to help it. She present something that seems very true but is going to be very hard for some people to swallow - those who think that middle class culture is normative and simply want to see people pull themselves up by their own bootstraps (hence what you can read on some of the negative reviews).

Extremely insightful and accurate. Everyone who works with people should read this, especially those who work in the nonprofit sector.I manage a nonprofit and have found Payne's descriptions of the poor, middle class and the rich accurate and helpful. So often we struggle with issues that require knowledge of why someone embraces destructive behavior.The book is not easy to read. I felt that the way it was structured was more for a lecture than a book, but that aside, the content of the book was worth overlooking the layout of the material.

This book had a fair amount of useful information for the presumably middle-class teacher dealing with students living in poverty; the discussion of the hidden rules of the culture of poverty, middle class, and wealth were interesting, as was the discussion of the casual and formal register in speech. Still, there were a few too many sweeping generalizations, a few too many instances of bending over backward to be non-judgemental beyond where it is reasonable to be so, and a bit too much emphasis on understanding the source of misunderstandings but too little on where to go from there, how to resolve the problems, for me to rate the book at five stars. Definitely worth the read, though.

By helping parents and children learn how to use them more effectively, we've seen dramatic changes for the better among our own patients.The other part of the equation is to put parents and children in charge of their own asthma care. The traditional model of health care, with the doctor making most decisions and the patient following along, isn't very effective in asthma care. A large part of our success has come from helping our patients and their families understand exactly why asthma happens and what they can do to keep it under control. We've worked with them to apply simple, common-sense techniques to make these medications even more effective with fewer side effects. We've helped them take other steps that have reduced their need for medication. I have never reviewed a book before despite always reading the reviews before buying a book. No book has ever changed my life the way that this one has!! My son was diagnosed in March 2003 and his doctor thought his asthma would just be something that was tacked onto the end of a cold and nothing more. Unfortunately he seemed to always have a new cough (classic asthma symptom). I bought this book because I was interested in learning more about the disease and becoming a patient advocate for my son. Having this book is a gift! It has changed our lives. We were scared and now we're prepared! My son has not had the cough since we started the program in June. We've been using the recommended daily monitoring and preventive meds and life is grand. If you're dealing with asthma, BUY THIS BOOK!

This book is wonderful. Every parent of a child with asthma must read it. I have searched and searched for information this helpful and practical for two years. The book gave me confidence in our Dr. (who is always too busy to give us much information), but also pointed out some areas we need to work on with the Dr. I always question all the medication we give our son. After reading this book, I feel I understand asthma and the current treatment plans.

This book was just what we needed to help us understand and control our son's asthma. Dr. Farber explains things in a clear and easy to understand manner. I keep this book accessible at all times. I definitely recommend it to anyone who has a child suffering from asthma. It's great for first time parents of asthmatic children and for those who have had years of experience as well.
