Olivia, a Caldecott Honor Book, by Ian Falconer is a children's picture book that captures the heart of a confident, strong-minded child. This is the first in a series of Olivia books by Falconer that incorporates the supposed personalities of his own children. Olivia has a wide range of interests from soccer to drama but puts her own flair on them all. This book goes through snippets of Olivia's days. Some say it it disjointed, but the movement from activity to activity speaks well to a young child's short attention span. The short sentences and simple format of the black, white and red pictures and words make this a visually interesting book as well. The pages of words are not overwhelming for a young reader/listener. There is also criticism of Olivia's attitude. I think a parent of a strong-willed child might recognize this as real life handled with humor. Falconer introduces young readers to artists when Olivia visits an art museum. She is disciplined with a "time out" for her Jackson Pollock "reproduction" on the wall at home showing that she does not go unpunished. The book is also honest about Olivia's tenacity, "She is very good at wearing people out. She even wears herself out." This look at a girl who feels her potential is unlimited is a timely, funny read for both children and adults.

It's Olivia! Need I say more! If you have never heard of this character, then meet her and her antics in this book. She is in many more stories/books. She is quite the pig. Read it to my 6 year old active grandson on Skype. He sat long enough to listen to the story and he liked her. Most kids do. That's all that matters.

Received this as a gift and now we give it as a gift all the time. Its an adorable story, and I love the end ("you really wear me out, but I love you anyways"). Plus it taught my daughter who Jackson Pollack and Edgar Degas are - imagine a little two-year-old shouting "Jackson Pollack!"

Such a wonderfully written and drawn book! I love Olivia!!!! Her spirit, positivity, joy, innocence, and love for life are infectious!Being in red, black, and white only captures the pure essence of Olivia and the story.

Two stars: This is a GREAT book, and it was cheap. However, it’s a smaller copy (which may be in the description), AND oddly, when it was manufactured, some of the pages weren’t cut correctly. It was like they had been cut 95%, SO I had to carefully use my finger to pull the pages apart. Thankfully none of the pages tore. I should have paid the extra $5 and bought this from Barnes and Noble.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted the board book or this version with the CD. I’m glad I opted for the regular book with disc. It’s fun to listen to the reader and there’s music, too!

Anyone who's ever had a toddler...especially an active, inquisitive one can appreciate this story. In the literal sea of vividly colored children's books out there, Olivia stands out based on simplistic artwork, color choices, and it being a GREAT story.Parents and children can relate to Olivia's antics...singing loudly, trying on everything in the closet, having a vivid imagination, painting on walls, etc., especially Olivia's mom saying "You know you really wear me out." And the fact that she is a spunky pig makes no difference.I have enjoyed hours reading this book (and other Olivia books) to my daughter. It is short enough for a bedtime story but long enough to be complete. A good book all around.

I bought this for my five year old, and wish I bought it when she was a little younger. Despite the simple story line, she still likes to look at it, and I hope it's a book that will help her on the way to reading.I was at first put off by the simplistic writing, but then realized that it was rather sly and rather good. Perhaps I was more put off by the fact that I have my very own Olivia living in my house, and the similarities are rather too striking.The artwork is by far the best I've seen in a children's book, and I am happy with this purchase for the artwork alone. Since my daughter is old enough to appreciate and care for books, I bought the very good hardcover edition. The quality of the art on paper is superb, and leads me to wonder if we should add a child's book as a category of fine art.

There are many reasons to have a bungalow kitchen-to either restore the one that is there or to build a new one in a period way. Bungalow kitchens are an important piece of history-the history of the house, of the twentieth century, of women, and of technology. And because of their simplicity, usefulness, honesty of design and materials, they can easily be made to function for the twenty-first century without compromising their integrity. Jane Powell is a restoration consultant, house restorer, lecturer, and author of six books, including Bungalow Kitchens, Bungalow Bathrooms, Bungalow Details: Exterior, Bungalow Details: Interior, Bungalow: The Ultimate Arts and Crafts Home, and Linoleum. The Powell "Bungalow Bathrooms" and "Bungalow Kitchens" books turned out to be just right for inbetweener remodelers, like us. We bought a true Denver Bungalow and wanted to modernize while keeping the old touches, adding some new old touches, and generally remaining true to the spirit of the style. Didn't have the inclination or the money to tear out things that worked just in order to do an authentic and absolutely accurate restoration, but wanted what we did do to look and feel right. (I did save the ice block delivery door and the vegetable cooler with the outside access.)These books show you what works and what doesn't and is loaded with photos and text that will give you lots of ideas. We poked around many salvage warehouses and after research and looking at books like this we knew a lot more about what we were looking at and where it was supposed to go.The upshot is that maybe we now have second hand rescued stained glass windows from Chicago in our Denver house, but still. These are cool, sharp, and inspirational books.

Anyone who has an older bungalow style home should study this book before planning a kitchen remodel. Edited to add: several years after my first read through this book, I revisited it and found that my opinion has changed. This is still a great way to see photos of original craftsman kitchens. However, I found the authors' "obsessive restoration" sections for the most part to be ridiculous, and even some of the so-called"compromise solutions" to be silly and fall short of bringing a kitchen into a fully functional 21st century workspace.I thought I was something of an old-house purist but apparently not.

I discovered this book, Bungalow Kitchens, in the local library, and returned to it time after time because of the beautiful photographs. After checking it out for the fifth time, I bought it. It carries information on restoring small Tudor style kitchens with authentic colors, cabinet types, hardware, and interesting descriptions of 1920's kitchen appliances and built-ins. One such, detailed in the book, is the California cooler, a cabinet with an outside ventilation system for storing foodstuffs in cold weather. Many books of this type concentrate on the bungalow kitchen, which has darker woodwork and is more in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright, but in this book the Tudor kitchens are generally white or in lighter colors. This book also provides a collection of 1920's rooms filed with authentic old kitchenware and decorated in a Tuder period style. The sections 'Obsessive Restoration' versus the 'Compromise Solution' sections can help you decide, depending on circumstances, funds, and time, whether you wish to create a truly authentic 1920's kitchen, or one in the spirit of that style. Sections include: The history of the modern kichen, its eye appeal, the layout and design, the appliances and how to deal with professionals. I still refer to this book constantly, even though my kitchen is now restored to its original roots. It is a great reference and resource book on early kitchens of the 20th century Tudor.

My house is a craftsman style house that was built in the 1920's. I bought these books to help during the restoration/remodel of our kitchen. I highly recommend this book to anyone doing a remodel on an older home. It offers so many pointers, and a couple different levels of restoration: obsessive...(which gives you the do's and dont's for a truly authentic restoration), and another, which explains which modern materials and appliances can offer the same look without having to go to a salvage yard to redo your house:) LOVE this book!!

I also have Powell's Bungalow Bathrooms and found both to be very informative. Although Powell seems to be more of a preservationist than I am, I found it helpful to know what is authentic and what is not in kitchens of this period. I feel like I will make more conscious and educated choices. For example, I was considering a farmhouse sink, but now that I know that those were really of an earlier period and generally not installed in bungalows, I'm rethinking whether I want one. I still might, but I'll do it knowing that I am veering from the authentic. I also get a kick out of her strong opinions and enjoy groaning at her corny puns.

I bought this book to get ideas on renovating my 1930 bungalow kitchen. Although the book focuses more on restoration than renovation, I still found it a wonderful source of ideas. Filled with lots of full color pictures of restored and well-preserved kitchens, the book is worth its price for the pictures alone.The text covers both historic and current issues and is a wealth of information. Each section of the book has a chapter called "Obsessive Restoration" for those serious about historic integrity, but also offers a "Compromise Solution" for those of us who need to balance 21st century demands.We found the book extremely valuable in picking layout, hardware, appliances, cabinets, and flooring. It really helped us to design a kitchen that meets the needs of a modern family, yet which blends in with the historic values of our home.

If you are looking for a book about trendy Craftsman-eqsue kitchen designs, this book is not for you. If, however, you are looking for a very thorough, meticulously compiled source of historically accurate information on Craftsman kitchens, then you will adore this book. Many of the photos in the book are museum-quality representations - heck, some of the photos were actually taken in living museums. If that bothers you or isn't what you're looking for, maybe try "The New Bungalow Kitchen" by Peter Labau instead.

Really appreciated the thoroughness and what I could learn about how my house used to be. Fixing up a 1920's bungalow with a "remuddled" kitchen felt so weird and clumsy until this book! I think the author's inclination towards being a bit of a purist is actually helpful in that I can decide which parts of that to take and make my own. I learned from her what my house used to look like and why, which is such a helpful thing to keep in mind as I try to make it functional and beautiful once again.
