This is a remarkably thought-provoking book of historical fiction for young readers. It deals squarely with the Jefferson-Hemings relationship--though obviously not explicitly--and raises questions about families, masters, and enslaved people in a way that encourages thought and conversation about the (in)human aspects of slavery. It holds Jefferson accountable for his participation in the institution of slavery--yet also acknowledges his contribution to the creed that made that form of labor and exploitation untenable in the long run. I can't think of a better way to introduce young people to a difficult subject, yet one that they and we as a society are still grappling to come to terms with. The author's note at the end is also valuable for providing context about the life of Hemings, as well as clarity about the blurred lines between historical facts and engrossing fiction.
This is a fantastic non-fiction book for elementary students written in the perspective of James Madison Hemings, one of Thomas Jefferson's children with his slave Sally Hemings. The authors have taken time to research James Madison Hemings in particular and his voice in this picture book biography is fantastic as he shares what it feels like to see his father play with his white grandchildren and not acknowledge him. Although children of all ages would enjoy this book, I would recommend it for grades 3-6.

Excellent story. Children will enjoy this work of historical fiction. My grandson and I enjoyed the story very much.
The books is good, but ignores some of the tough issues related to slavery.
It was and still is common for politicians as high up as the presidency to have children with mistresses and slaves. (Slaves are no longer but plenty of politicians still have mistresses).This picture book gives a glimpse of our American history that is rarely talked about which is why I am intrigued by this book. It tells a forgotten story needing to be told for the relevance of todays turmoil.Written by Jonah Winter and illustrated by Terry Widener. Yikes!This is what happens whenNon scientists with an agenda get ahold of factoidsRape is romanticizedAnd someone says we need a new picture book.This book is largely based on the work of Annette Gordon-Reed, a lawyer who sought to prove her case. And her case was that Hemings and Thomas Jefferson had a love affair.Ignoring the fact that if they had had a sexual liaison, the imbalance of power made it impossible to have an equitable relationship, paternity of THOMAS Jefferson is not at all a done deal.I'm not related to any Jeffersons and it is a matter of not much importance to me who fathered Hemings' children. Facts, however, are important. While DNA evidence proved that it was a Jefferson who fathered at least one of Hemings' children, it also proved that not all of her children were of Jefferson descent. It is more likely that the poor woman was raped by more than one man that that she was in a relationship, as we now see one, with any of them.Hardly picture book material.Specifically, the line of Hemings from the "Jefferson in Paris" son was proven to be not a Jefferson of any type. (This is important because the only possible Jefferson at that time and place was Thomas; other times there were at least 8 other possible Jefferson progenitors.) Reed picked-and-chose her oral history, capriciously keeping any stories that pointed to Thomas and throwing out the many oral histories that pointed to "Marse Randolph," or Peter Carr.And on this very shaky ground Winter wrote his book about James Madison Hemings.The book is extremely beautiful. And the writing is smooth and heart rending. For that it gets two stars.It would have been possible to write a book about Sally Hemings that was this beautiful while also leaving the question of parentage open, as history must do. The afterward that says "most" historians agree that Jefferson was the father of Hemings' children is simply not true.Especially in the light of recent "alternative facts" it is essential to be accurate. And even more especially in picture books.
