I read this book to get a different point of view about travel. I liked the author's descriptions about how he travels and about some of the adventures he has had. I also liked his humor.I traveled similarly in Europe for 4 months when I was 31. The book did not inspire me to to do it again at 73. Now I either plan my own trips entirely or plan for time around small group (<28 people) tours.Although he mentioned a (very) few women who he met traveling on their own in a similar way to him, based on my experience I sincerely doubt that they got along just fine and had as easy a time of it as he did.I do think the book is a refreshing read in this day of enormous cruise ships and large group tours. And he does have some good suggestions for breaking the ice with strangers.
I listened to a podcast interview that featured Seth and subsequently purchased his book. Hauled it to Belize with me and read it between planned excursions and lazy beach time. Laughed out loud a number of times especially as I was eating conch fritters and coconut cake purchased from children packing their home-baked wares in buckets along the beaches in Hopkins. You know what, eat the cake from the bucket! Not that I was looking for encouragement but Seth’s book did validate my personal travel preferences and really did make me feel better about the anxiety I feel when I’m forced to talk to strangers.A delightful read!
This book is more about being curious about travel than getting anywhere.
Really enjoyed this book. It's a wonderful combination of interesting travel stories along with practical advice. I plan to adjust my travel as a result. I especially enjoyed the author's disdain for the traditional travel industry. I now have a different perspective as I search for hotels and activities online. If you love travel and are looking for some ways to make it better, you should read this book.
This may be the most generally useful book on travel I've ever read. (And also the funniest.)
with some really great traveler insight. Fun to read
Rediscovering Travel is a remarkable book. For six years the author wrote the popular New York Times column “Frugal Travelerâ€. Now, with the goal of reigniting a sense of adventure, Seth Kugel’s new book provides an insightful look at travel, a montage of some of the author’s experiences and suggestions and ideas for expanding the reader’s travel experiences. And, all the while, it is also humorous and captivating. As a traveler/tourist myself, this book was a validation as to why I like to travel to new places. It also confirmed that some of the quirky ways my family and I travel are actually providing us with unique and memorable experiences. Although I already knew that we were doing something right (at least for us), Mr Kugel has reassured me that we are on the right track. One of my many favorite parts of Rediscovering Travel is the section about about using a “real†map, versus maps that are easily accessible on our phones. Since we’re still the family that pulls out the battered and marked-up paper map, it made me feel like Mr Kugel and I are kindred spirits. That may define us as old-school, but there’s just something about using that paper map…I highly recommend Rediscovering Travel for anyone who enjoys traveling, exploring and finding new adventures. It will help you to think about your travels in a different way and, perhaps, give you some new ideas to apply to the way you travel. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.
“Rediscovering Travel†is an amazing companion for those who want to see the world by Seth Kugel, beloved in his six-year fifty-country tenure as the New York Times’s “Frugal Traveler.â€Geared to newbie and veteran globetrotter alike, “Rediscovering Travel†shares Kugel’s own tales of perfectly imperfect adventures, while helping readers seek their own. He is especially adept at helping travelers make the most of new digital technologies without being hamstrung by them. With vivacity and humor, Kugel shows how we too can rediscover the joy of discovering the globe. 5/5Pub Date 30 Oct 2018Thanks to W. W. Norton & Company and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are fully mine.#RediscoveringTravel #NetGalley
