Wes, the Captain of the local firehouse in the remote town of Hawke, Alaska comes to Daniel’s rescue and boom, sparks fly and not just from the fire. It’s almost an immediate attraction between these two. Not just hot but RED HAWT! I found myself yelling Portland! Say whaaaat? Read the book to find out, teehee.Another winner from the king of romance. I love a book that makes me feel so good I’m fanning myself from the first page to the last and that’s what this book delivers. Plus an in depth description of the Alaskan wilderness with a side of moose sausage and bacon biscuits thrown in to tantalize my tastebuds had me chomping at the bit to beat a path to Hawke, Alaska to find Wes and Daniel. This book has it all!
Daniel and Wes are delightful MC's. They are so real and i enjoyed their interactions. I loved the Alaskan backdrop for the story. The writing flowed and i thought that that the story-line kept me engaged.I enjoyed the connection and steam between these guys. i also enjoyed seeing both men show their competence and leadership when the time came for them to be taking care of business in their careers.This is the second book in the Submission Series and i liked having a chance to see the MC's from book one as part of this story.
I liked this story a lot! It was a sweet love story with no angst which is my favorite kind of book. Daniel and Wes are written to be like real people you could meet walking down the street. You root for them to stay together. They each fight to stay with each other without drama. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!!
Wes, a super alpha fireman, and Daniel, a pilot on a vacation of self discovery, meet when Daniel inadvertently sets his rental cabin on fire. Wes saves an unconscious Daniel & takes him to his nearby cabin to recover.While Wes and Daniel were hot together I was thrown out of the story almost immediately & had a hard time getting back in story. What threw me out of the story? Well, it was this...Wes rescues Daniel, yeah!, Daniel has an a "tight, ashy feeling in my chest" a super dry, achy throat, a headache and wait for it: Wes says he's not going to change his plans to go to a bar and after he deems Daniel is ok. He says he can't leave Daniel alone so off to the bar they go. Yes, Daniel agrees but come on, smoke inhalation is dangerous. Wes is a firefighting professional, his behavior contradicted this. He should've known better. I'm guessing his actions were designed to show how dominant he was & how eager Daniel was to participate in life but that scenario was just wrong.As I stated I had so much trouble getting past the fire debacle but I did continue reading. Wes and Daniel are a good match thoroughly enjoying each other. And the descriptions of the Alaskan outback, wonderful..so well written.So, in spite of having to suspend my disbelief of the Fire Incident, I look forward to reading Jason Collins' next book.
Let me start by saying I read this as a standlone given it was on sale - I haven't read book 1. The blurb clearly states that it could be read as a stand alone, but from how the book started I couldn't help but think I was missing something. I'm not sure if this was just the writing style or if you did need to read book 1 first.I will also say the author has a beautiful way of writing, but what that also meant was that a lot of the story flow was interrupted by the flowery and sometimes overly descriptive wording. This also served to distance the reader from the characters, because while the writing was descriptive, it was focused on everything external to the characters, almost like a travel brochure for the Alaskan area - so I didn't really get a solid description of what they looked like, we don't know certain characteristics about them, such as how old they are, whether their eyes wrinkle when they smile, whether their gaze darkened when they are turned on etc - that sort of description is missing. Even with the alternating POV, and the fact that the writing style meant a lot of the scenes end up being inside their head, both guys seemed to dissect everything in a descriptive way, not necessarily a thoughtful way. This also meant some sections were drawn out with descriptive passages interrupting conversations, rather than them occurring naturally. It made for stilted reading, and came across as a bit too formal to fit the character personalities.Further, a lot of the character background was missing. By the 40% mark we still know next to nothing about either of their pasts - how old they are, whether they have any families, what their families are like, what sort of upbringing they had, and almost nothing about them now due to the flowery language taking away from what these guys are really like. To top it off, it was never mentioned that early on as to whether either of them is gay or bi, or identified in a specific way (asexual, pansexual, demisexual etc). From one scene, it appears that Was has never been with another guy before, but then he doesn't have any second thoughts, doubts, and knows exactly how to prepare and handle Daniel - and all of his mates and colleagues instantly accept and tease them for their relationship - they're in a small town in Alaska and there is no-one who is surprised by Wes suddenly being with a man, or with the two of them showing affection towards each other. There was definitely Insta-Lust, but appears this was a case of Insta-Love as well. I didn't see the relationship actually develop - it was just suddenly happening and they were both completely fine with it, unable to stop thinking and fantasizing about each other all day. The connection between them was missing too - I saw nothing except physical attraction from Daniel to Wes (not the other way around either) that would indicate why they'd rush into being with each other.Then there is the BDSM aspect. It is not set up as I would have expected it to be. The guys start out by mucking around with each other - at one point Wes tells Daniel to choose a safe word, but the engages in what is very vanilla. Later in a chapter from Wes' POV, he talks about having to punish Daniel for his brattiness, but they never set up their relationship or discussed what rules or limits they were both comfortable with! From what I could tell, Daniel had never been involved in that sort of lifestyle, and it was iffy as to whether Wes had either - hence the problem with the lack of character building and background.Personally, in a book of this length I like more depth and backstory, and I found that was sorely lacking. I found myself skipping paragraphs at a time to get past the waffle and find something more substabtial - and even with that skimming I didn't miss any of the main plot points. It definitely wasn't what I was expecting from the blurb which was a let down, and I'm not sure I would recommend it based on what I look for in a book. I have read other books by this author that didn't have the same issues so I don't know what happened with this one.
